David Pipes Steves, Jr., beloved husband, father, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle quietly and peacefully passed away early on Saturday, August 16. He was born on August 28, 1936, in San Antonio, Texas. He was the son of Mary Folbre Steves and David Pipes Steves. He was a direct descendant of the original Canary Islanders who settled in San Antonio in 1732 and of John W. Smith, the Alamo's last messenger and San Antonio's first mayor. A 1954 graduate of Texas Military Institute, he attended the University of Texas at Austin where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. In 1958 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Subsequently, he returned to San Antonio where he worked first in the family business, served his country as a Captain in the United States Army Reserve, and then retired from USAA after 14 years as an Operations Project Manager. For a time he and a good friend had a small business manufacturing heavy gun safes. Always ready with a friendly handshake and a contagious smile, David had a zest for life and was a family oriented person, loving nothing better than being with his wife and children. David's favorite hobbies included, playing the guitar and singing in his beautiful baritone voice, fishing, cooking, building furniture, star gazing from his prized telescope and watching the San Antonio Spurs. He also had an interest in his family's genealogy and worked at trying to find every ancestor possible. As a member of the Texas Cavalier's, the time he served as King Antonio LIX as well as the years he spent working on the Cavalier's River Parade was an especially rewarding and passionate part of his life. Visiting the school children of the city during Fiesta Week remained a happy memory for him. David was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Robert Witt Steves and his stepson, Frank-Steven Pina. He is survived by a large adoring family: his wife, Vera; his children, Christian, Hollis, Michael and Katherine; his sisters and their husbands, Mollie Steves and Bartell Zachry, Sallie Steves and Phillip Peacock; his sister-in-laws and their husbands, Eny Charles and Edward dec.d, Esther Campos and Robert, Irene Sibley and Roger, Lisa Gonzalez and Lucy Hemerly, and Patricia Hasbrooke Steves; and numerous nieces and nephews.
