He was a 1934 graduate of Brackenridge High School and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was 28 when he volunteered and after basic training was put in charge of training several units of new recruits, who were all much younger than 28 and called him the "old man". He served as a supply officer for the duration of the war.
After resuming his civilian career, he traveled throughout Texas for many years as a dry goods salesman, working for AB Frank, Carr-Bulethe and Washington DeeCee Manufacturing, Co. He was well liked, admired and trusted by his customers who often asked him to stock their shelves with his own estimate of what would be best for the their store.
As a young man, he was baptized at Baptist Temple and over the years served as a Sunday school teacher, Deacon, Chairman of Finance Committee and Chairman of the Board of Deacons at Baptist Temple.
He was a member of Christian Businessmen Fellowship and Bible Study Fellowship. He was very active in his retirement years, among other things, taking a Spanish class which culminated in a trip to Mexico, making dollhouses for his granddaughters, attending exercise classes, calling members on Baptist Temple's monthly birthday list and singing "Happy Birthday", gardening, and feeding the birds and deer in his backyard, who ate most of the flowers he planted.
He was always lending a helping hand to neighbors, friends and members of Baptist Temple. He had a precious sense of humor and was a delight to his friends and family.
