Dave White was born on March 31, 1932 in Decatur, Illinois. His parents were Russell and Helen White and his siblings were Bob White and Suzanne Knuepfer.Dave played golf and basketball in high school. His father, Russell, died before Dave graduated and his outstanding golf skills helped him attend the University of Illinois on a golf scholarship. While attending U. of I. he said he spent too much time on the golf course and not enough time on school courses. This led to him being drafted in the U. S. Army where he served in Bamberg, GermanyDave married Joan Barabe before being deployed. And right before he returned to Illinois, his first son Russell was born.Dave finished school and started working in Peoria. His second son, David, was born in 1958. In 1960 Dave moved the family to Boulder, Colorado. When they arrived, they discovered the company he was to work for had closed. He quickly found work at the Rocky Mountain News in Denver, where he stayed employed until he moved to San Antonio in 1974.In 1967 Dave married Linda Mahan. Dave and Linda eventually became fixtures in the River Road neighborhood. There they participated in community events, made many friends, and loved sitting on their porch looking at the San Antonio River. They also enjoyed the company of many pets, but none more special than Teddy. Dave and “Teddy Dog” were often seen wondering the streets of the neighborhood several times a day and stopping to talk with friends and neighbors. After Linda passed away in 2018, Dave eventually moved to The Forum at Lincoln Heights. There he made many new friends, loved the “sing along”, and irritated the residents with the horn he blew on his walker. The staff, especially Paul, were great there and he would often tell others how well he was being taken care of. He also greatly enjoyed the help and friendship of Dr. Bill and Jessica.Dave was an excellent bridge player, becoming a Life Master at 36 years old. He was also an outstanding golfer who loved playing the courses all around San Antonio. Dave leaves his sons Rusty and David, daughters in law Ginny Mitchell and Pamela Malsch, five grandchildren Katie, Sara, Jordan, Jenny and Jessi, step granddaughters Tara and Ali, nephews David Knuepfer, Robb Knuepfer and Jay (Kay) Hufstedler, grandniece Jayme, and eight great grandchildren. One of what Dave valued most was his weekly “meeting” with The Amigos. Jimmy, Dick, Richard and David kept him engaged and gave him something to look forward to each week. These friendships were treasured by him and his family.Dave was a gentle, caring father, grandfather, great grandfather, father-in-law, husband and friend. Most who knew him will remember him being one of the funniest people they’ve known. He was funny even when he wasn’t trying to be funny. That special sense of humor lives in all of us who loved him. He will continue making others feel good and laugh; forever.
