David,  I miss you already. What a great servant leader of men and beautiful friend of mine. You were always welcoming, encouraging, and expressing “right in the moment” those things most others just skim over, or even just miss. You might already know I have started this “journal entry” (you hear me right?) over several times, but today I am finishing this!  Here’s a few ways you modeled Christ to me....eliminating boxes, removing walls, sometimes just blurring the guidelines for a unique opportunity to go free form!  Ahh, and “taking the back so others get the front”... Mark 9:34-35  Putting the heart and motivation when necessary over inflexibility of a rule ....Mark 2:23-28  Your friendship from the day we met seems - for me, easiest to describe in musical terms (my corner of creative passion). Of all my friends, you’re definitely most like a rock symphony, and I can talk about you like complex, multi-stage arrangements blending together in one meandering composition. All who know you get that you’re just not a three chord kind of guy. I hope you’re saying “wow” to this atypical approach to weave great ideas together. Picking a song was a fun way for me to share how cool I think David was. How unique, and off the middle of bell charts that he was. I’m an artist snd I know nothing of what he captured on canvas. I’m a “little m” musician and in this, I can appreciate the lengths he went to create specific moods on his albums. He’s a complex man made in the image of God. But you are as well, I just may not know you. Or maybe I do. We’ll pray that God explains my inadequate attempts to comment on his super cool creation of the man, the servant, the husband, the father, David Winter. Brother, I love you and I can’t wait see you and serve with you again for a thousand years in the Armies of heaven! Rev 20:4-6. I first meet David about twenty five years ago while working at an independent record store in San Antonio, TX. He always left us all smiling because of his amazingly genuine love he had for life and people. We soon became good friends and both realized we had a strong kindred spirit based on our mutual love for Christ and the arts. And if David would take you on as a friend, he would be the truest type of friend one could ask for. If there was ever a person willing to listen when you needed to talk it was David. He would give you totally his undivided attention like no other person I’ve ever met. I will dearly miss those talks but know we will have new things to talk about at another time and place. I will forever consider my self blessed for knowing you and the conversations we had. You will be so missed my dear friend!    To Donna and Amanda who I regrettably never had a chance to get to know, my most sincere condolences to you both and thank you for sharing with me this awesome soul. It was such an honor to attend David's BEAUTIFUL celebration of life.  My husband, son, and I all attended; the vast array of story, art, and music touched EACH of us in a very special way. We are so much richer just by getting glimpses of his life through his the voice of his family, church, and friends who honored him so beautifully.   Amanda, I learned you are just like your dad - I so very much want to tell you that you can and will carry his legacy forward beautifully and well. I love you and your momma.    I didn't know David very well, only his smiling face at church. I knew him as Donna's husband and Amanda's dad. My only real interaction with him was in November of 2019, when I went up to the front of the church for prayer. I was especially grieved and hurt that day. I remember their very fervent prayers and David assuring me that Donna would be reaching out to me in the coming days via text to follow-up with me and she did.   Sincerely, Amy Burgin

The world needs more Davids.  His kindness knew no bounds and the thousands of lives he touched saw the love of Jesus in action.  We became better people by knowing him. Fond memories of visiting the Winter's house stretch back to my childhood. I watched some of the most amazing movies there (The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid, The Jetsons, etc) made Amanda's room a mess of the coolest toys (Mousetrap, LightBright, etc) and was always amazed by David's art / music studio room. As I grew to a young teen, I'd show David some of my progress with art, and he lovingly encouraged and coached me, regardless of my lack of skill. As great as his art was, his love for others was greater, and I could feel it.  As the years went by, he also helped me get started with making electronic music and video editing. He shared his own wonderful art and deeply themed music with me. It was these experiences at their house and the interactions with him that helped foster and shape my interests of today as I later earned a Bachelor's Degree in Media Arts and Animation and now freelance in multimedia. We visited afterward and his encouragement and coaching continued.  Hoping for some praise one day, I once shared a rough music recording with him. He said, "I love your heart". No vain praise or harsh critique, just heart. What mattered was Jesus, and what God would have me continue to do: enjoy the process, singing to God with all my heart. Testifying of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection, part of the lyrics went:  "The true vine The tree of life Jesus Christ Risen forevermore.  Higher than the stars, Deeper than the grave, Your love branches out Filling all things."  That powerful love that raised Jesus from the dead was felt in David's life. He was and is a fruitful branch in the vine of Jesus Christ. It still feels surreal, and my heart aches that I'll have to wait to see him again. Donna and Amanda, I’m so thankful for your family and the many ways you two, David, and others who have gone before have touched and blessed my family and me. I am grateful that y’all and David are and were a part of my lives, and I know that He is celebrating with Jesus now, everything having been made new. I look forward to the day we all get to celebrate together again! Love you guys.

My favorite memories of David were watching movies with Amanda and he would pop in occasionally and laugh with us at the best parts in Young Frankenstein or Monty Python. He had the best sense of humor. Megan Pope

I first met David and Donna when I was assigned to care for his mother in the hospital in San Antonio. A difficult time my family was going through and one for his family as well. I got to know the love and gentleness of soul of both he and Donna. We bonded immediately. They met my wife Debbie soon after and the deal was sealed. We became life long family. There were many days we spent together that brought healing to the heart and soul. I miss my brothers physical presence but I have his memory presence with me always. Thank you Donna, Amanda and Rick for sharing David with us. Until we ask meet again you always have our love.

David left such a legacy of love in every life he touched. His love for Jesus radiated through his spirit, making an eternal difference in countless souls. May the Lord comfort you all and give you all His peace.  Susan Osborn

David was in our life group for 3 years. We loved David. We loved his love of Christ.  He gave absolutely the best hugs. He let you know he loved you. He also shared his love of Christ with all.   We will miss David. We know he is in a good place however snd we will see him again!

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born and God and knows God. 1John 4:7 This verse is the motto by which David lived His life.  The love David had for his friends and family burned strong.  Often He spoke of Tom Beach with deep love remembering how kind and patient Tom was when mentored him as a young man.  A topic David never tired of speaking about was how much he loved Donna.  While talking about her he would look over at her and gaze.  Forgetting everyone else was in the room.  David was known for LOVING others well.  I am honored to be a recipient to that love.  When our daughter passed he was there to hold me and rub my shoulder.  When our family had something to celebrate he was there to look into my eyes and smile with that great big smile. He was never in rush to move on.  When David stopped to hug, kiss or give you a smile you knew he was saying  “You are important to me.”  “I love you.” “I care.”   David was a gift to this world. -I miss you David.  Elsa Ezell

Some of my fondest memories of David was having his camera dangling from his strap with a huge smile on his face talking to Rwandan children. When he was finished taking their pictures, David would talk to them and show them their picture. There were many conversations around the dinner table at Africa New Life Guest House or at my house in Musanze or on the road in the van or at a village house. He genuinely loved people and it showed in his attentive listening or asking questions whether in San Antonio or Africa. Your photographs told stories of the heart. David, thank you for touching my heart and together you, Donna and I traveled many international miles in our missions together.

David was truly a gift to all of us that knew him, and yes I can so relate to the experience of his special hug that let you know you were special to him. Conversations with David will always be remembered whether talking with him about Art, Music or our common bond in Christ Jesus he always shared a positive uplifting attitude that let you know he had time for you. To Donna and Amanda we are so saddened by this temporary loss and we  hold to the promise that we will be re-united. We will be praying for you.  To my buddy David, I will never forget you ! Danny and I will always cherish the time and friendship that we had with David. He was a true man of God and lived out his faith at each encounter in a mighty way. His hugs and kisses on the cheek will be so missed as well as his words of wisdom and encouragement. Love and prayers to Donna, Amanda and family. ❤️

David has always been such a special friend to Chuck and me. I remember the first time I met him and got to enjoy one of his special hugs. He seemed  to love to hold on to you until you got the message that you were special and greatly loved. Coming from a family that was rather stoic in  demonstrating emotion, I found his greetings very healing.  I am looking forward to seeing you again, dear friend. Enjoy the wonderment of Heaven and ecstatic joy of being with our Father, Jesus and Holy Spirit.
