Dean Ellis Barker passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 66, with his wife of over 40 years, Brenda, by his side. They met in San Antonio, Texas and were rarely apart. Brenda fell in love with him and said he was her own personal Elvis.
Dean was born in Bryan, Texas, the first child of Billy Joe and Margie Jane Barker. He grew up in Helotes, Texas, graduating from Helotes Elementary, Pat Neff Middle School and John Marshal High School. He was active in the Boy Scouts attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He enjoyed backpacking and hiking. He loved doing glass blowing and listening to music. But most of all, Dean loved meeting people. The friends he made throughout his life he kept close, never losing touch with them.
Dean received an Associate Degree in Applied Physics from Texas State Technical Institute in Waco, Texas which focused on automobile mechanics. He enjoyed working on cars and he maintained his interest his whole life. He always had a passion for Volkswagen and owned many different models over the years. The most iconic was his maroon VW truck and his driving it is was well remembered by friends and family. He discussed buying a Baja Bug only two weeks before he passed.
But more than anything, Dean was a beloved father who doted on his son Nathaniel Barker. There was nothing Dean would not do for Nathaniel. Over the years, Dean was constantly making sure Nathaniel’s care and special needs attention never waned.
Dean worked several years in the vinyl lettering industry and eventually established his own sign company, Rapid Signs. He loved the art of sign making and was always on the cutting edge of programming and developing designs. He was highly respected in the industry, personally worked with Linda Pace and, for years, did the signage plaques for art exhibits at Art Pace and at the McNay Museum. This dovetailed well with Dean’s love of art. He amassed over 50 paintings and sculptures during his life and enjoyed discussing the artwork he accumulated with visitors to his home.
Dean was proceeded in death by his son, Nathaniel Barker and his father, Billy Joe Barker. He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Lee Barker, his mother, Margie Jane Barker, his brother, Don Barker and his wife Elenita Ravicz. Dean is also survived by his cousins, Brian Barker and his wife Lynette, Bobby Singletary and his wife Linda, Kathi Cunningham, Pam Wolfert and her wife Collette, Bruce Wolfert, Linda Wolfert as well as his good friends such as Joe Conales and his wife Kathy, Rusty Wilson and his wife Stephanie, Ricky Gordon, Dale Ott, Sandra Goodson, David Beckman, Michael Moody, and a host of other close friends that are too numerous to count.
