Remembering happy times with Uncle Derrick both in the UK and USA; driving cross-country in his Alfa and particularly the "hangar" visits to see the Lightnings, Hunters and F 16's.

Lynn and family, I'm so sorry for your loss, I never had the opportunity to meet Derrick but I remember the stories out in the break area. You are in my thoughts.

I just wanted to fill in the detail of my fathers Royal Air Force career. He started at RAF Saint Athan as a 16 year old boy entrant training on airframes. There was a posting in between which I do not recall but he then went to RAF Akrotiri (Cyprus) where he worked on the BAC English Electric Lightning. It was the fastest fighter interceptor of its day with 2 Rolls Royce Avon engines and capable of MACH 2.2 at 40,000 feet. I have no doubt that this aircraft very special to him. Then to RAF Leuchars (near Saint Andrews in Fife Scotland) where I was born. Apparently I would only sleep when flying was taking place! He was promoted from Junior Technician to Corporal and posted to RAF Wattisham (again Lightnings! and near Ipswich, Suffolk) where my brother Craig was born. He worked hard to gain his Higher National Certificate to allow him to apply for a commission. Post this, he completed his Officers Basic training at RAF Henlow (near Bedford, Bedfordshire). A year was spent at RAF Cranwell (near Sleaford, Lincolnshire) at the Royal Air Force College on an engineering course. His first active commissioned role was as a Flying Officer at RAF Valley (Anglesey, North Wales)working on the Hawker Hunter. I remember him coming home and making a bee line for his Lightning model in the living room and announcing he was going back to them at RAF Binbrook (North Lincolnshire) This was with promotion to Flight Lieutenant. He had two roles here as the engineering officer for Lightning Training Flight and headed the Lightning Special Engineering Project Team. It was from these roles that he was promoted to Squadron Leader and given a prestigious exchange posting to USAF MacDill AFB in Tampa Florida working on the then advanced F-16. This was at the time of the Falklands conflict and I know that my father always felt he was missing out somehow being so far out of the loop. This made for interesting instances of us passing the Argentine exchange family as we lived quite close! On return to the UK he spent time at the Ministry of Defense in London and then going to a role at HQ Support Command at RAF Brampton (Cambridgeshire). I, in turn joined the Royal Air Force and served for 12 years and would have not done so with out the example set by my father. We were the closest we had been when I was completing my basic training and I got a lot from his experience on phone calls during it.

Derrick has been a very close & true friend. I (Gene) began our friendship when we both worked for the Villages of Westcreek Owners' Association & volunteering for various Committees since mid 2004. He was one that Barb & I could count on no matter what. The most recent Committees was the Architectural Review,the Standards Revision & By-Laws. We will miss him greatly.

I only had the pleasure of meeting Derrick a few times over the decades but he was always smiling and friendly. I liked him. I'm very sorry for the family's loss and wish you all the best in this difficult time. A quote I have always liked is: "A life well lived is a life not wasted." Derrick had a life well lived.

Words are poor things when we suffer the loss of a loved one. We know Derrick will be missed every day as you move forward in life. Remember all the happy times of your lifes together for those are what provide the blessing you will remember. God Bless
