

Donald R. Burroughs, age 83, went to be with the Lord on January 27, 2015 in San Antonio, TX. He was born on April 18, 1931 in Huntsville, AL to Albert & Oma Burroughs. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend who will be dearly missed. After attending high school in New Hope, Alabama, Don attended the University of North Alabama, where he was in ROTC and on the college baseball team. As a senior, he tried out as a pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals, but decided not to go back. In 1953 he entered the Army as an MP and then was accepted to flight school in San Marcos, TX. He had numerous assignments and training courses over the years, to include Officers Advanced Missile Course in order to become Commander of a Hawk Missile Unit during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He followed this with a one-year tour in Iran, training pilots. In 1968, he attended Command & General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, KS and was subsequently assigned to Ft. Sam Houston, where he retired after 20 years. His service to his country included two flying tours in Vietnam. After leaving the military, Don entered real estate and opened one of the four original CENTURY 21 offices in San Antonio. He retired from real estate in 1995. His next “career” was trying to shoot his age in golf. He finally did it after his 83rd birthday.
Don was preceded in death by his first wife, Bettye Frances Burroughs; and brother, Eugene Burroughs.
He is survived by his second wife, Nina Burroughs; daughter, Dawn Shaw & husband David; 3 sons, Dennis Burroughs, Michael Burroughs and Jeff Burroughs & wife Terri; 3 step-children, Julie Garcia & husband Vic, Kurt Eggerss & wife Kathryn and Karl Eggerss & wife Amy; 11 grandchildren, April Burroughs, Jon Burroughs, Stefanie Bernstein, Brian Burroughs, Michael Shaw, McKayla Burroughs, Drake Eggerss, Jillian Garcia, Anson Eggerss, Avery Eggerss and Kate Eggerss; 2 great grandchildren, Madeline Bernstein and Carter Burroughs; 2 nephews, Rick and Don Burroughs.
The Memorial Service will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Sunset Ridge Church of Christ, 95 Brees Blvd., San Antonio, TX 78209. There will be a burial at a later date at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, Easter Seals or the charity of one’s choice.
