

Donald H. Ewers, (Sp 5, US Army Ret) 71, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving wife and children on Monday, August 12, 2019 in San Antonio, Texas. A Saint Louis native, Donald was born to Robert and Martha Ewers on May 10, 1948.
As he would often say, "The military brought me to San Antonio and I never left." He was a medic and served at Ft. Sam Houston until his retirement (medical) in 1974. Donald was an alumni of the University of the Incarnate Word ('80 BA, '85 MA) and served the University as a senior lecturer in Art and Communication Arts for over 30 years teaching Photography and Spinning, Dying, and Weaving (Navajo). He was an accomplished photographer and writer. He enjoyed watching the San Antonio Spurs. After retirement he became involved with the Alamo Area Master Naturalist chapter and was vice president of the San Antonio chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas. As a Texas Master Naturalist he served as a liaison to Headwaters Sanctuary at University of the Incarnate Word, and he volunteered as a field guide to the San Antonio River Authority (SARA), SA Parks Natural Area, and San Antonio Botanical Gardens Texas Native trails. Despite his serious medical challenges he completed over 30 5K runs this past year. His last run was at the end of April 2019. He was proud of his two silver medals that he won in the Texas Senior Games.
He was preceded in death by, his Parents Robert and Martha Ewers, brother; David Ewers. Donald is survived by his wife of 45 years Lorraine Ewers. Son; John M. Ewers (Angelique) Daughter; Theresa Ewers Chapa (Alex). Grandchildren; Leah, Michael, Hannah, David Ewers, and Rebekah Chapa. Great grandchild; Elijah. Sister Sharon Kirby (Ken), Brother; Jon Ewers (Nancy) Sister-in-law, Mary Buchanan and numerous nieces and nephews.
