Doris C. Johnson, a native of San Antonio, died peacefully on January 12, 2024. She was born on August 21, 1927, and grew up on the South Side, graduating from Harlandale High School at the age of 16. During World War II, while she was still a teenager, Doris played saxophone in an all-girls band and enjoyed playing at dances and parties. The friendly girl had a vibrant social life and loved to dance. Because a co-worker at Western Union was busy, Doris took her place and went on a date with Clyde Johnson, who at that time was in the Army Air Corps, having come home after serving his time as a bomber pilot in the Pacific. Clyde fell in love with the lovely red haired girl, and they married a mere 6 weeks after they met. That marriage was an inspiring success, and Clyde and Doris went on to become proud parents to 2 children, Russ and Elizabeth. Over the years, Doris enjoyed being involved in her family life, as well as social activities with many friends. She and Clyde traveled the world, but Doris always loved going back home. She was active in the PTA, Girl Scouts, The SA Needlework Guild, and in later years enjoyed continuing her education with the Northeast ISD’s ALIR program, in which she enthusiastically participated. Doris moved to Austin, where her son and daughter and their families live, 4 years ago. She was always a loving and proud wife, parent, grandparent, and great-grandparent. Doris was warm, friendly, fiercely loyal, and caring, beloved by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by Clyde, after a marriage of 64 years. She is survived by her son, Russell Johnson and his wife, Debra Crosby, and her daughter Elizabeth Smith and her husband Stephen Smith, all of Austin; grandchildren, Laura Heikes and her husband Kevin Heikes, Amy Johnson, Greg Johnson, and Ashley Jhawer and her husband Shan Jhawer; great-grandchildren, Anna Heikes, Leah Heikes, Asher Heikes, Mackenzie Jhawer, Rory Jhawer, and Remy Jhawer. The family wishes to thank the staff at Juniper Village at Spicewood Summit, most particularly Shelly Herrera, for providing a warm and safe home for Doris during the past 4 years, and Suncrest Hospice, for ensuring that Doris’ final days were spent peacefully.
