Dorothy Marie Schaefer Jones heard the words of her Lord, “Well done, my good and faithful servant; enter the joy of your Master,” on November 29, 2011 at the age of 85. She was born in Houston, TX on June 20, 1926, but moved to San Antonio as a baby and remained a lifelong San Antonian. She graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1944, and soon after married her “cute sailor,” Howard Jones, a marriage that spanned sixty-seven years. Dorothy was blessed with many gifts. She was an extraordinarily gifted mother. Dorothy raised her three children with an instinctive understanding of their individual needs and goals. She was involved in every aspect of their lives, applauding them in their successes and comforting and encouraging them when they failed. In 1968 she added the role of Registrar at Robert E. Lee High School to her already full life, a position she performed with remarkable expertise and conscientiousness for twenty years.
Dorothy and Howard were both blessed with a lifelong, unshakeable faith in their Savior Jesus Christ. They were charter members of Pilgrim Presbyterian Church, and Dorothy was active in every aspect of church life there. Several years ago, they joined Covenant Presbyterian Church and were immediately welcomed as church family and Dorothy quickly was involved in church life. In addition, she actively embraced her involvement in the Emmaeus community, gaining many friends and fellow servants.
In everything Dorothy did, she gave 100%. This was never more evident than in the past five months as she battled her weakening body. We have never seen a stronger, more determined woman than she is. She has taught all of us what courage and faith really mean. Dorothy has been longing to go home for the past five months. She is now in her true home--her heavenly home.
Dorothy is predeceased by her parents, Everett and Schlatie Schaefer, and one son, John Everett Jones. She leaves to mourn her passing and rejoice in her life her husband Howard, son Stanley Jones and daughter-in-law Sammie, daughter Carol Griffith and son-in-law Larry, and light of her life, granddaughter Jamelyn Griffith. She is also survived by two loving sisters Edith Jacobsen and husband Jake and Janet Mills and husband Terry, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 2, 2011 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 10:00am at Sunset Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church 211 Roleto Drive, San Antonio, TX 78213.
