I briefly knew Dottie when she was in high school and her sister, Patsy Gosnell, and I were students at St Patrick's Academy. I will always remember Dottie as a beautiful, sweet teenage girl who liked to tease the boys, and so it is hard for me to believe that Dottie, who is still alive in my memory as a teenager, has passed away. I hope she had a full and happy life. To Patsy, I hope you are well, and I often wonder how you are doing, especially now.

Keri, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. My mom and your mom graduated from high school together and their 45th high school reunion was this past weekend. I talked to my mother and found out about your mom. My heart goes out to you and your family. Please call or email me if I can be of any assistance. I will be in SA late on the 27th. I remember Dotti from the 6th to the 8th grades. She was my 1st love and I have great memories of my 1st dance with her at Breakinridge Park and of her mother taking us to the movies. I was deeply sorrowed to hear of her passing. I would very much like to hear from Dottie's family.

I just learned of Dottie's death. Strange . . . a friend and I were remembering her last night. My brother, John, and I have spoken of her often. Always, our memories of her are of her beauty, inside and out; how she always tried to make everyone feel good about themselves, how kind she was. Back at St. Patrick's Academy, in the 50's, she had been my brother's girl friend; and, had paid wonderful attention to me, the little brother. I was always so proud when such a pretty girl gently teased me, asked how I was doing, cared to give me some of her time. I always hoped I'd see her again, one of the more memorable people in my life.

Dottie belived in me when I worked under her supervision at the VA hospital, I always think of her when I problem solve and feel I can't. She made me feel confident in my abilities as an RN, 1984-1993, at the VA.

My thoughts and prayers go with you, her family. It was my privelege to be one of Dottie's students. She was one of the most incredible teachers that I have ever know. I remember as a young nurse, I had missed realizing how critically ill a patient was in the University Hospital emergency room. I was doing that young nurse self chastisement and bemoaning how unfit I was when she came in with her students and offered me a word of wisdom. Dottie reasured me that as time went on and I was confronted with more seriouldy ill patients, I someday would look at a patient and just know how sick they were. As time went on, she proved to be right and I have thought of her many times when I had that sense that someone needed a closer look. She'll never know how many lives she has saved by sharing that one bit of wisdom and teaching a young nurse how to develop and follow her instinct. I can still hear her soft, encouraging voice in my mind. The world has lost a special soul, oh, but heaven must be a bit brighter tonight. One of its angels has come home. Dottie was truly a gifted teacher, nurse and friend. Thank you for sharing her with me.

In a addition to being an incredible practitioner and teacher, she was a fantastic friend. Your mother, Dottie, was the driving force for me in nursing school in the mid 70's. It is because of her that the love for trauma nursing became the focal point of my career. What an awesome teacher!

Dottie was my mentor. I think of her often as I go about work teaching undergraduate and graduate nursing students at the UTHSCSA School of Nursing. Every once in a while, another faculty will mention Dottie's name and then we reflect on those teachers who shared their marvelous gifts and love of learning with us during graduate school, and certainly Dottie was the best. She was an expert in human physiology, and immediately made the connection to pathophysiology and patient care. She made these connections vividly for the student. She drove home her nursing care points in the end everytime, backed by the pathophysiology and treatment aspects. She so emphasized the critical nursing role played in each aspect of patient care, and particularly monitoring signs and syptoms and anticipating events--this stays with me. The simple act of listening to the characteristics of blood pressure sounds, or the fine aspects of heart sounds can tell so much if one attunes to the sounds and knows the pathophysiology. These and so many things I learned in an undergraduate cardiovascular elective I took from her in 1973...this inspired me to pursue cardiology nursing in my career. Many professionals I worked with even as a new nurse would ask, where did you learn so much? I learned how to learn and make the connections from Dottie. Her example in the clinical area was the consumate interdisciplinary nurse and the evidence-based clinician. She could take one look at a patient's chart data, perform a brief examination and interview, and proceed to tell the physician about her opionion, change nursing interentions usually adding to, and modifying treatment and including the family. Those of us in her clinical group, became accustomed to physicians almost standing at attention when Dottie addressed them; they always stopped when she approached, they honored her and actively entertained her suggestions, sometimes they fumbled for answers, then she honored them. She also encouraged us to learn the principles, apply them and to discuss them to improve pateint care; we were never in the passive role with any health care provider in the context of patient care. Like Dottie, we talked with anyone connected to the care of the patient, the PT, RT, dietician, MD, social worker and nursing assistant. I learned to be a nurse, well-versed in the sciences, articulate with other health care professionals for the sake of my patient. I often think of Dottie when I am explaining coronary cirulation and areas of myocardial infarct...I see her at the blackboard drawing, connecting, making learning alive and relevant to nursing. 
Dottie and my path crossed many times over the years, as colleagues at professional meetings, nurses in clinical, and teaching peers in academia. Always we were friends through each life trauma. She also helped me with my 90 year old aunt who was having difficulty with assisted living arrangements. The ever true nurse, she spotted the medical problems, layed out the issues that needed to be addressed and befriended my aunt in the process. My aunt was so fond of Dottie. I could go on... I can only hope that my teaching is something close to the gift Dottie shared so easiy and that stays with me today. She was my mentor and still is. In Deuteronomy, it says "May my teaching drop as the rain." Certainly, Dottie's teaching and exemplary clinical example has given nurturance and continued sustenance to many nursing students. We continue her legacy, and the rich fields of nurses providing expert clinical care and compassion is the fruition of her gifts. My sincere condolences to the famiy. 
I will be out of town on Thursday and Friday,the day of the funeral. I am sad about this. I would love to come and extend my smpathy in person. Know I am there in my loving thoughts.
