Doug was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many. He was born in Los Angeles, California on February 12th, 1937, and moved to Corpus Christi, Texas in 1941. He graduated W.B. Ray High School in Corpus Christi in 1955, and from Trinity University in 1959. In 1958, he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Beckman, with whom he had three children. In 1982, he married Nancye Miller, who became his partner in business and life; they shared two children. Doug remained a San Antonian for most of his life.
Doug found early and life-long success in the media and marketing industries. His career included roles as the general manager of radio stations in Flint, Michigan, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and of KTSA while it was the top-rated AM station in San Antonio. He later co-founded Shark TV, where he served at the helm for more than 25 years. Under Doug’s leadership, Shark TV became one of the country’s largest media buying agencies servicing the radio industry, and later expanded to a full-service advertising agency. In his retirement, he volunteered his business experience and mentorship as a board member to local nonprofits through San Antonio’s Masters Leadership Program.
In 2005, he married Kathryn Nielson McCall, the great love of his life. Doug and Kathryn enjoyed many happy years as active residents of The Dominion. Always a warm presence, Doug volunteered as a member of his Neighborhood Outreach Committee welcoming newcomers. He also enjoyed serving on the Security Committee.
One of the first things people remember about Doug was his friendly demeanor. He was always happy to strike up a conversation and had an easy laugh. Doug had no greater pleasure than gathering friends and family for fine food, wine, and camaraderie. He also had a lifelong commitment to fitness as an avid runner for decades, and impressively picked up skiing at the age of 50. An experienced international traveler, Doug most enjoyed seeing the world with Kathryn. His life philosophy was accentuating the positive, doing your best, and leaving a meaningful impact. He will be dearly missed.
Doug’s family offers its gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Discovery Village at Dominion for making his final years and days comfortable and peaceful.
Doug is preceded in death by his parents, Alexander and Helen McCall, his granddaughter, Rachel McCall, and his former wives, Patricia Beckman Darnall and Nancye Miller. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn; their children, Mark McCall, Adam and Kathy McCall, Mike and Molly (McCall) Carroll, Matthew and Katie McCall, Cameron McCall, Richard and Kim Fehseke, Brad and Elaine (Fehseke Eschman) Gray; their grandchildren, Allison (McCall) Gallegos, Evan McCall, Michael “Max” McCall, Arden McCall, Reece McCall, McKenna Fehseke, Reed Fehseke, Tom Eschman, Zoe Eschman, and Harper Gray; and his brother in law and sister, Lloyd and Theresia (McCall) Yakes.
