Doug started his career at Nelco Coil company in Alamo, Texas, and then as an entrepreneur in a variety of businesses including restaurants, B&B Owner (The Royal Swan and The Tara Inn) in King William Historic District in downtown San Antonio, owner/landlord of apartment complexes in San Antonio, and as a real estate investor for the majority of his life. Doug was a country boy at heart; he grew up on a farm and often spoke of his beloved horse, Paint. He was the FAA President of his high school class and married the FFA Sweetheart, Donna Nelson. He loved western movies and western art. Doug was very interested in Texas history and on one of his many visits to the Alamo, his daughter Carrie recalled how a crowd gathered to listen as he explained just what happened at the Battle of the Alamo to his grandsons.
Doug loved his family and was always there to lend support whenever needed. He was proud of his children and enjoyed the amazing meals his chef son, Brian would prepare for the family events.
Doug’s greatest joy was being a grandfather. Doug loved to attend his grandchildren’s sporting events, especially the football games. He was an avid football fan and could reel off trivia since the first Super Bowl game in 1965. Doug was a loyal Dallas Cowboy fan; his all-time favorite Quarterback was Roger Staubach. Doug would throw the football to his oldest grandson, Alex before he could even walk and was forever nicknamed “Ball” by his grandsons. Doug will be dearly missed by all who knew him for his kind heart and laughter.
