Dr. John A. Narvarte, age 81 of San Antonio, Texas passed away April 30, 2021. He was alive for 29,640 days. Dr. Narvarte was born on March 7, 1940, in San Antonio to his parents, Pedro Eugenio and Antonia de la Peña Narvarte. He was married to the love of his life, Rebecca Rita Smith for 54 years.
Dr. Narvarte graduated from Central Catholic High School in San Antonio and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1963. In 1965, he received a Master of Science degree from St. Mary’s University and later received his doctorate from the University of Arizona. He was a professor of mathematics at the University of Texas at El Paso until his retirement and served a portion of that time as Chairman of the Mathematics Department.
During his tenure at UTEP, Dr. Narvarte was also a founding member of RTR Software. RTR was a software company comprised of mathematicians and a computer scientist. They were first to design a program that could chart stocks on a computer and provide trending data for users to anticipate buy and sell signals. RTR had an exclusive agreement with Dow Jones to develop what would become the Dow Jones Market Analyzer – the first program of its kind. This program revolutionized the way people kept track of stock trends.
In addition to being a brilliant mathematician, scholar, and teacher, Dr. Narvarte was the best husband, dad and grandpa. He enjoyed talking about math and helping anyone with their math homework (even if you didn’t ask). He also enjoyed following the stock market, playing Sudoku, solving puzzles, reading, fishing and cursing…errr…supporting the Spurs.
Dr. Narvarte was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; and brother, Peter Eugene Narvarte. He is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca Smith Narvarte; children, Amy Narvarte, Julia Romanow, Peter John Narvarte, and Katherine Ozuna; grandchildren, Diego John Narvarte and Eva Narvarte, Maxwell Romanow and Wylie John Romanow, Alana Martin and Iolani Martin; siblings, Samuel Narvarte and Anita Kitchens; and many other loving relatives and friends.
