To my Favorite Uncle John. I love you and will miss our talks dearly.  Rest easy.

We will miss you Uncle John.  Your laughter, light-hearted sense of humor, and fashion statements will be missed.  All our love to the family.

Dr. John Anthony Narvarte was the best man I have ever known.  When I think of all the wonderful things about the man, what rises to the top is that he had a certain respect for people, a fairness, that few people have and there was a certain, distinct comfort you felt in talking with him.  My father, Captain Peter Eugene Narvarte, Jr. was his older brother and we lost him December 22, 1967 in the Viet Nam War.  That loss haunted my Uncle John.  It seemed to be a pain that he could not escape and it made me very sad for him to miss his older brother so much and for so long.  Though this is a very tough and significant loss for all of us, I can see the big smiles on both of their faces as they get to see each other in heaven after all this time.  I bet they have a lot to catch up on.  Because of the loss of my father and the love he had for him, my Uncle John gravitated towards me and my two brothers and in my mind, he became a father figure growing up though we seldom got to see him and his family since we lived about 600 miles apart.  In college, when I was at least smart enough to change my degree to mathematics is when my Uncle John became my mentor.  We talked math regularly.  I had many questions and he always had the answers.  For years to come, I would receive pages and pages of notes, explanations, examples and solutions, in his meticulous, beautiful hand.  Anyone who has seen his handwriting knows exactly what I mean.  Somewhere further along the way, Uncle John went from being a father figure....to my mentor....to my best friend!!  He was always there for me....always!!!  We talked on a regular basis including the night before he passed.  We talked about everything and he always knew what to say.  If I was down, he knew just how to lift me up and he always did just that.  Looking back now, he did this by just being himself.  Uncle John honored me by being the Best Man at our wedding on June 13, 2013.  Asking this of him was the easiest decision I ever made.  The Spurs played Game 4 in the NBA Finals that night, but he was right there for us and by my side.  He was the absolute best role model and I studied him....how he treated people...the words he chose...how he raised his children....how he was as a husband....how he taught math....I just studied him.  I did this since I recognized early on that the man was special.  There was a charm about him and he had a subtle impact on all he came in contact with.  I never told him that I was studying.  If I had told him, he would have played it off and made some funny, humble comment….but I knew better and I never missed a chance to learn a life lesson from him….big or small. The class is now complete and my Final Exam will be going through life asking myself, “What would Uncle John do?” when I face some decision or issue.  I feel sure that he will somehow continue to give me the answers that I need. As many pages of math notes that my Uncle John wrote me over the years, I could write just as many pages of my memories of him, all of the jokes we shared, all of the talks we had about math, basketball, stocks, Longhorn sports, all of the times he was there for me and more….but there is not enough time for this.  I feel a bit sorry that there is not more humor in this post.  I know he would like more laughs in here but I hope he understands. I know this is selfish of me but so be it.  There is a significant void that the loss of my Uncle John has left in my heart and soul.  Time of course will help to fill it…but like the loss of my father to him….it may never be filled completely.  What I do know is that I am so blessed to have known the man and shared a special bond for as long as I did.  It was a true gift!  For him and for this, I will always be grateful.  I suppose due to some dumb guy code, we never said I love you….though it was crystal clear on both sides.  So, better late than never…I love you Uncle John and I will miss you dearly!  You served us all for so long, always putting yourself last and I pray that you have found your peace.  John Michael Narvarte
