Born in Brooklyn, New York on July 25,1949, he embarked on a remarkable journey of intellectual pursuit, making profound contributions in the field of Optometry and beyond.
Steven graduated from Hillcrest High School in Dallas, Texas in 1966 and furthered his education at the University of Texas in Austin, where he majored in Microbiology. Continuing his quest for knowledge, he pursued further studies at the University of Houston, ultimately obtaining his Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree in 1974. His exceptional talent and unwavering dedication to research earned him numerous accolades, including prestigious awards such as the A.O.F Research Award, B. and L. Outstanding Research Award, and the Beta Sigma Kappa Research Award, all of which were obtained in 1974. Notably, his abstract was selected for presentation at ARVO (The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology) in the same year, further highlighting his remarkable contributions to the field. Additionally, Steven also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston for some time.
Throughout his illustrious career, Steven held esteemed positions in numerous professional associations, including serving as the President for the Dallas County Optometric Society for some time. He also maintained positions in the American Optometric Association, Texas Optometric Association, National Eye Research Foundation, and Bexar County Optometric Society. His unwavering commitment to excellence and patient care led to his recognition as a Diplomate by the American Board of Optometry.
For 25 years, Steven owned and managed Turtle Creek Eye Associates, located on Lemmon Avenue in Dallas. Notably, his family played integral roles in the practice, with his mother serving as the practice's diligent accountant. Together, they created a warm and familial environment that extended to their patients, fostering lasting relationships built on trust and care.
Steven was revered for his compassionate approach as an Optometrist, his expertise as a talented Diagnostician, and his specialization as a certified Glaucoma Specialist. Patients relied on him for his meticulous attention to detail and genuine concern for their well-being.
In addition to his professional achievements, Steven's multifaceted nature was evident in his wide-ranging interests. He possessed a remarkable wit and was known for his ability to predict weather patterns with astonishing accuracy. A true polymath, he immersed himself in various domains such as Meteorology, Cosmology, conspiracy theories, Taekwondo, Mineralogy, Golf, and fast cars. Throughout his life, he displayed an insatiable curiosity and passion for knowledge, readily sharing and discussing his many passions with others.
Steven's personal life was marked by significant relationships. He was married to his first wife, Robin Prather, and together they had one son, Daniel, who they lost at birth, followed by two cherished daughters, Loren and Rachel. Later in life, Steven remarried to Helen Kaye, with whom he was blessed with two additional daughters, LeAnna and Nicole. His love for his daughters was unwavering, and he found joy in bonding with them through shared travels, hunting for minerals, holiday traditions, and engagement in their childhood activities. He made it a point to consistently express his love for them, ensuring they were always aware of his affection.
Possessing a great sense of humor, Steven always had a quick quip to bring laughter to those around him. His light-hearted nature was contagious, and he had a knack for bringing joy to any gathering. Additionally, he had a penchant for speed, owning several sports cars with racing engines throughout his life. During his high school years, he found his thrill at the drag races in Dallas.
Steven's love for sports extended beyond the racetrack. He enjoyed various athletic endeavors, including tennis, Tae Kwon Do (earning his black belt as an adult), and, of course, golf. A shared passion for the game with his father, nurtured through games of catch, sparked his love and talent for pitching on his little league baseball teams.
The mountains held a special place in Steven's heart, providing him with a sense of tranquility. Among these mountains, Lake Tahoe held particular significance, and he sought solace in its serene beauty as often as possible.
Steven's affinity for Texas football was undeniable, and he took great pleasure in watching the team compete. The spirit of the game resonated with him, and he enthusiastically supported the team, reveling in the camaraderie and excitement it evoked.
Steven was preceded in death by his father, David Earl Kaye, mother, Shirley Shapiro Kaye, and son, Daniel. He is survived by his beloved older sister, Barbara Rigsby, and her husband Charles of Wylie, Texas. Additionally, he is survived by his devoted wife, Helen Kaye, and his loving daughters, Loren Pignone and her husband Scott of Little Elm, Texas, Rachel Kimball and her husband Kevin of Carrollton, Texas, as well as LeAnna Brooks Kaye and Nicole Kaye of San Antonio, Texas. Steven also leaves behind his adored grandchildren; Gavin Pignone, Taylor Pignone, Shane Kimball and Ryan Kimball.
Steven will forever be remembered as a lifelong learner, a compassionate healthcare professional, and a cherished source of inspiration. His exceptional achievements, unwavering love for his family, and unyielding thirst for life will be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
