Dr. Collins was born and raised in eastern Nebraska, obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 1944, was in private practice from 1944-1952 and was in the U.S. Air Force from 1952-1979. Dr. Collins also obtained a Master's Degree in public health and served on many Inspector General teams.
Dr. Collins’ medals include the Legion of Merit and many others, most with oak leaf clusters. He was instrumental in starting the Air Force sentry dog program at March AFB in the 50’s, participated in Operation Plumbob atomic bomb testing in the 50’s and began the People-to- People agricultural program in the Azores in the 60’s.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Anna Slavik Collins and is survived by his son, Terry Leigh Collins.
At Dr. Collins request, there will be no local services. Interment will be at Ft. Sam Houston Columbarium.
