

Born in Shawnee, OK in 1925, Sandy was raised in San Antonio. Sandy graduated from Harlandale High in 1942. His beautiful tenor voice allowed him to attend Trinity University on scholarship.
Sandy joined the US Navy in February, 1943 serving on the Battleship USS Pennsylvania and on the USS Walter X. Young APD. Seeing action in most of the major Pacific battles, Sandy was in Tokyo Bay for the signing of the peace treaty ending World War II. After mustering out of the Navy, Sandy married the love of his life, the former Betty Evans of San Antonio in 1946.
He re-entered the military in 1949, this time as a sergeant in the US Army. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant on completion of Officer Candidate School in December of that year. Sandy served his country in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam where he served under John Paul Vann.
Sandy completed his degree at McNeese State University. Overseas stations included England, Panama, and Venezuela. Among his awards are the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Venezuelan Cross of the Armed Forces, and induction into the US Army Officer Hall of Fame. Sandy retired from the armed forces in 1972 after serving 27 years.
He worked for The National Bank of Fort Sam Houston, where he rose to the level of Senior Vice President. He enjoyed serving the military in the roles of: National Director of the Air Force Association; Chairman of the National Board of Trustees for the Arnold Air Society; Director of the Retired Officers Association; San Antonio Chapter and Alamo Chapter President, State President, and Region IV President, and board member of the Board of Directors of the Association of the US Army AUSA.
He was a popular speaker at numerous civic events in the Alamo City representing his passionthe U. S. military. Sandy also starred in a number of musical productions and was part of various singing groups. After 21 years of service to the military banking community, he retired in 1994.
He is greatly loved and will be missed by his family/friends as well as the many people whose lives he touched.
He was preceded in death by sons Steven Paul and Thomas Mark. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Betty; son Jerry wife Marion, daughter Candy Rattray husband Buddy; grandchildren Jerry Faust, Jr, Kerry Higdon, Steven Faust, Tiffany Rattray, Timothy wife Nicole Rattray, Alexander Rattray, and Laura Tanner; and great-grandchildren Alexandra and MacKenzie Powell.
