Earl Edgar Smith III, affectionately known as “Bucky”, was born on July 29, 1946 in Hominy, Oklahoma to Earl Edgar Smith, Jr and Marguerite Shaw Smith. He is survived by the love of his life, Patsy, who was his best friend, wife, and greatest advocate. Their relationship was a defining part of his life, and a testament to the love and companionship they shared. Earl is also survived by his children, Travis, Ryan, Ty, and Allegra, and sisters Karen, Rene, and Kipa, and many nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.
Throughout his life, Earl was a man of deep conviction, remarkable accomplishments, and an unforgettable personality. But, above all, his faith and family were at the center of it all.
Earl lived a life of service and achievement as a physician, veteran, speaker, author, and leader. His professional life was marked by a genuine commitment to caring for others and sharing what he had learned with those around him. As the first residency trained, Board certified Emergency Physician in the great state of Texas, with more than 900 speeches and countless publications under his belt, he reached an incalculable number of people through his knowledge, experience, and unmistakable personality. Despite his serious devotion to both medicine and his professional life, Earl never took himself too seriously. He was sarcastic, playful and had an unending wit.
His competitive nature and love for athletics started early on in football, baseball, and even setting records in track. But it was his love for the game of baseball that he would carry on for many decades playing in the San Antonio Senior Men’s Baseball League, even getting to play at Fenway Park to a humble, but nonetheless enthusiastic crowd of family and friends.
Earl’s life was not founded in his professional accomplishments, multiple accolades, athletic achievements, or hundreds of speeches he gave, but in the people he loved and the Lord he cherished.
Earl leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, service, humor, determination, and love. He will be forever missed but never forgotten.
A Memorial Service will be held at Shearer Hills Baptist Church on September 11, 2026 at 10:00 a.m.
