Edith Lingle Hollan passes away peacefully on Thursday, November 27, 2014, age 91. She is survived by her children Rosemary L. Hollan; Robert B. Hollan and wife Lynn; Douglas W. Hollan and wife Inma; John R. Hollan; and Edith H. Jones and husband Sherwood, grandson Andrew H. Jones and wife Miranda and great granddaughters Edie and Jane Jones; and by her sister Jacquelyn Robinson and husband Dr. Edward H. Robinson of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Edie Holland graduated first in her class at McCaskey High School in Lancaster, PA., and then excelled in undergraduate studies at Dickinson College in Carlisle. Finishing college in the middle of World War II, she turned down an opportunity to become a chemist with Armstrong Industries and obtained a Masters degree in nursing at Yale University School of Nursing. There she met, and in 1946 married, O. Roger Hollan from Texas. Following dad's service in the Army Medical Corps, they spent several years in Philadelphia for his residency at the University of Pennsylvania in internal medicine, and then moved to San Antonio in 1950.
Edie retired from nursing while rearing five children but was continuously engaged in Republican politics and school and community activities.
About 1972, she returned to nursing. She was a critical care nurse at the Nix Hospital and Wilford Hall at Lackland AFB. Her career culminated at the world famous Brooke Army Medical Center burn unit, where she served for eighteen years and became the head of Infection Control.
Our mother loved her children, cats and dogs, her house in Maine, everything about her Pennsylvania roots, mystery novels, good food, and pyracantha bushes brimming with bright red berries. She was an excellent cook. Our mother practiced multitasking long before it became a buzzword.
The family is grateful for the devoted care given by the staff during her two years at the DeMatel House at Incarnate Word Retirement Community.
There are no present plans for a memorial service. Memorial contributions may be made to the San Antonio Humane Society, 4804 Fredericksburg, Rd., San Antonio, TX 78229, or to the charity of your choice.
