Edith Riedel was born Edith Meehan on August 8, 1922 in Longton, Lancashire, England. She passed away February 11, 2015 after a 12 year battle with Lymphoma. Edith’s father, James, passed away when she was 3 years old leaving her mother, sister and brother to fend for themselves during the Great Depression in England. During WWII, Edith worked as an aluminum welder as her contribution to the war effort. During this time, she attended a USO dance at the nearby Freckleton AFB where she met Billie Riedel of Gillett, Texas.
Even though Billie was sent closer to the front in Belgium, they kept in contact. When the war was over, Billie asked Edith to marry him. On January 14, 1947, Edith flew across the Atlantic, landed in Texas and was married just four hours later in the same clothes in which she flew.
Shortly after, she started work at Margo’s LaMode store in downtown San Antonio where she had to adjust to a new country, a new climate, a new currency and a new language “Texan” all at the same time.
Edith is preceded in death by her husband Billie Riedel, her father, James Meehan, her mother, Mary Knowles Meehan, sister Irene Meehan Hall, brother, John “Jack” Meehan, sister, Audrey Watkinson and grandson, Syd Bryce McGlasson.
Edith is survived by her son, James Riedel, son, Gregory Riedel, daughter, Marsha McGlasson, daughter-in-law, Jill Riedel, and son-in-law, David McGlasson.
