Former San Antonio City Councilman, Edward H. Hill, went to be with the Lord on October 9, 2007. Ed was born on January 14, 1913, in San Antonio, Texas. He had seven sisters, and six brothers. Ed was raised in the shadow of Kelly Field where he eventually began his professional career in 1938.
Ed's career in Civil Service with the United States Air Force encompassed a variety of assignments requiring a great deal of ingenuity and ability to plan and organize large scale warehouse projects, material handling equipment and all areas of logistics support. During the time Ed was chief of the Material Facilities Division, the era of material handling mechanization began with the first carload of forklifts to be unloaded at Kelly. Ed retired from Kelly Air Force Base on May 10, 1968, after an exceptional Civil Service career covering 30 years. At the time of his retirement, Ed had achieved the grade of GS-16 and was the highest-ranking civilian in the San Antonio area managing over 4100 employees.
The entire Hill family attended Saint Mark's Episcopal Church, and all of the children graduated from Church School. Ed played Sunday school basketball at Saint Mark's on the sub-junior, junior, senior and adult teams. He lettered in football, basketball and baseball at Brackenridge High.
Ed met Nancy Lee Whitney during high school and they started going steady during their second year at Brackenridge High. Nancy also came from a large family and was the youngest of the Whitney children. Ed and Nancy were married on August 29, 1934, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, and their marriage produced three children; Loretta Lee Hill, Nancy Sharon Hill and Whitney Edward Hill. Nancy Sharon Hill Boucher preceded Ed in death. Other survivors in Ed's immediate family included grandchildren: Daryl Edward Engelbert, Kerry Engelbert Green, Robert Edward Hill, and Sharon Ann Hill. He and Nancy have two great grandchildren: Kendall Louise Green and John Edward "Jake" Green.
After his retirement, Ed was appointed to the San Antonio City Council on November 1, 1968. He was elected to two additional terms, and served a total of four and a half years as a City Councilman. Ed was a Thirty-second Degree Mason and member of the Texas Masonic Lodge No. 8, Scottish Rite and Alzafar Shrine. He recently celebrated his 60th anniversary as a Mason. Ed also served on the San Antonio School Board, was a member of the Citizens Committee for the SAISD.
In 1983, Ed and his wife Nancy moved to New Braunfels. Ed was a life-long member of St. Mark's Church and also attended Grace Memorial Church in New Braunfels. During his retirement, Ed enjoyed playing golf and fishing. Ed and Nancy were also members of the San Antonio Knife and Fork Club for over thirty years.
