Edward D. Kaplan

Edward David Kaplan passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 19, 2020. Mr. Kaplan practiced law in Newburgh, NY as a senior partner in the largest law firm north of New York City. In addition to practicing law, Ed was very involved with legal aid, local politics, and played an active role in the Junior Chamber of Commerce receiving the highest accolade -the National Senatorship award; as well as, enriching his community as Board President of the National Area Industrial Development Corporation.

Born November 18, 1929, to Lucille (nee Toback) and Sidney Kaplan, Ed graduated high school at age 15. Deemed too young for college, he was enrolled into Military school for two years. After graduating from New York Military Academy (NYMA), he garnered a bachelor's degree from Middlebury College in Vermont where he was a member of Chi Psi fraternity and later attended and graduated from Brooklyn School of Law. During the Korean War he served in the US Army in the ordinance corps in Japan.

Before moving to Texas in 1988, Ed taught summer courses to practicing attorneys at the Texas College of Trial Advocacy in Houston. Although he retired from his NY firm, he continued to practice law in San Antonio until his stroke in 2000.

Mr. Kaplan played football in college and the Army, as well as lacrosse at NYMA and college. Later, he would take up tennis enjoying singles and doubles. He not only took delight in playing sports but watching them. He was an avid Spurs fan and rooted for whatever football team that was closest to Texas.

In addition to sports, Ed loved music and theatre. He played violin as a young child and picked up bass in high school, which became the instrument of choice throughout his life. He could be seen playing it in bands for events, at his restaurant, and at local theatre. This led to his acting and directing stints. Although he was passionate about the law, sports, music and theatre, family and friends were his true joy.

Mr. Kaplan was preceded in death by his brothers, Burton Kaplan and Moran Kaplan; and his niece, Dena Fischer. He leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Ursula (nee Appel) Kaplan; his children, Karyn Collins and Gayle Alterman and her husband, Stanley; grandchildren, Jordan Purcell, and his wife, Vanessa, Sydney Purcell, Zoe and Kai Alterman, and Lucas Collins; sister, Edith Fischer; brother-in-law, Joseph Fischer; nieces, Sara and Nora Fischer, Nalini Kaplan; and nephews, Julian Kaplan and Brad Rothenberg; along with numerous cousins.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of Senior Haven, with special thanks to Mary Moga and Evelyn Auma.
