Edward Lope/Edward Lopez Jr. was born on October 7, 1952 to Esperanza (Hope) Lopez and Edward Lopez Sr. in Laredo Texas. He is survived by two brothers, Daniel O Lopez and David O Lopez.
Ed grew up in a time before the Internet and YouTube, and at an early age learned the mechanics of how automobiles and motorcycles work with books and by simply taking things apart and putting them back together. His love for restoring vintage motorcycles and automobiles was a life-long passion and it allowed him to use his mechanically gifted skills and talent up until his time of death. He had just finished his last restore and realized it was time to start selling all his automobiles and motorcycles.
Throughout his career, he had always been the fix-it guy. It started by enlisting with the US Navy where he served on the submarine Ulysses S. Grant stationed in Charleston South Carolina. After his enlistment with the US Navy, he worked with IBM as a Technical Engineer repairing and improving the operations of IBM systems. From there he moved on to USAA, Lockheed-Martin and University of Texas Health Science Center operating and maintaining database systems. He retired from UT Health Science Center in 2018. Also, throughout his working career, he valued the importance of a formal education. While working full time, he was able to obtain an MBA from Our Lady of the Lake University.
After retiring he enjoyed traveling and was always drawn to places near the ocean and seas. He loved scuba diving, spending time on the beach and collected sand samples from most of his traveling adventures. He also loved meeting the people from all over, wherever he may be and enjoyed sharing stories and drinks with all the new friends he would meet along the way.
Ed really loved and enjoyed dancing, bicycling, playing Pickle Ball. He loved listening and dancing to music and was a member of the Parrot Heads. He made many friends on the dance floor and was always known as a “good dancer”. Ed enjoyed bike riding and hitting the trails. He loved the feeling and challenges of riding on the many bicycle trails throughout the city. He recently picked up a passion for Pickle Ball. He loved playing and enjoyed the team approach and camaraderie. He really enjoyed it, especially socializing with other Pickle Ball enthusiast. He played Pickle Ball up until his last day on earth.
We invite those who loved him, inspired by him, and enjoyed his adventurous tales to share in grief together, this Wednesday, September 14th 2022. Memorial Services will be held at the Porter Loring North Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, bring a smile, a story, and donate to the American Heart Association in remembrance of Ed Lope.
