Ed was born in the Bronx, New York in 1937 to Anthony Victor Messineo and Margret Marie Gegus. Ed was proud of growing up in the city of New York. Many of his favorite childhood stories involved reminiscing how he and his friends could jump on the subway and explore anywhere in the city. Ed graduated from Bayside High School and attended State University of New York, Farmingdale where he earned his degree in chemistry.
He met his wife, Janet, in Connecticut. They were married September 15,1962 and remained happily married until Jan’s death in 2022. Ed’s service in the Army reserve, career in chemistry and medical instrumentation service was fulfilling. He worked for many successful companies such as Olin-Winchester, Beckman Instruments, SensorMedics, Bird Industries, and finally Bausch and Lomb. His work responsibilities included extensive travel within country and internationally, working with many of the largest and most prestigious medical facilities. Throughout life, Ed had the opportunity to live in many regions across this great USA. Each career promotion involved a move farther west, eventually taking his family to the left coast of California. He made many close, life-long friends along the way.
In retirement, Ed and Jan moved to Dayton, NV, where they were able to build their dream retirement home in a golf community. Ed was quickly adopted as a member of the men’s golf community at Dayton Valley Golf Club. Continuing to be a true leader, he took an active role in their community as HOA President. Ed and Jan’s travel continued to many points of interest, including multiple cities in Europe, Greece, Hawaii and points in between. They celebrated major milestones of the grandchildren’s lives and major holidays with family and friends.
The friendships and family-like relationships Ed and Jan forged lasted a lifetime through work and retirement. Ed immersed himself in multiple hobbies over the course of his life, including photography, candle making, stained glass, hunting, golfing, curling, trumpeting and cooking. His garage was outfitted as a modest woodworking shop. He enjoyed designing and executing projects for his home and friends. Ed was not able to resist any new gadget, therefore earned the reputation as the go-to neighbor for borrowing obscure tools and electronics. Ed’s family joked that he had perfected the mechanical, structural and organizational use of zip ties, trussing twine and labelling. He was the consummate storyteller, list-maker and master of the perfect hard-boiled egg.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife Janet. He is survived by two children, Elina Dunn (Robert), and Edward (Sheri) as well as two grandchildren Shannon Newman (Dylan) and Bobby Dunn. Ed is also survived by his brother Steve (Joy), extended family and many friends who have become “chosen family” over the years. Elina, Edward and their families are finding comfort that Jan and Ed are together again. Living to love and loving to “blicker”.
There are no services planned at this time. In lieu of flowers please donate to Team USA or Toys for Tots, as Ed was a staunch supporter of both organizations.
