

Ed was born in San Antonio on June 4, 1922 to Serena Agnes Schrier and Edward H. Reed, Sr. He attended Thomas Jefferson High School after which he joined the Army. He served in the 36th infantry division during WWII in Africa, Italy and France. Before and during the war he participated in amateur boxing and won the Texas Golden Gloves tournament advancing him to the National Golden Gloves tournament in Boston Gardens. After the war he went to work for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Later in life, he frequently stated he enjoyed every day he worked for the phone company. He was in the directory sales department at retirement. He was a long-term deacon at Parkhills Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. Ed’s life was devoted to his family. He enjoyed yard work and home maintenance projects. Ed and Dorothy were married 66 years and enjoyed traveling in their motorhome after his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Dorothy Castle Reed, his first wife Beverly Schallert, his mother, Serena Reed, and father, Edward Reed Sr., sisters Ruth Estelle Cammack, Sara Lee Watts, Mary June Almand and Margaret Hutto. Surviving family members include his daughter Rebecca Waugh, Nancy Smith and Colleen Bragg (Jerry) and son, Edward M. Reed (Peggy), nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He often advised “Always do a little more than what is expected of you”. Ed was an endearing patriarch with Dorothy by his side and will be missed by many family members and friends.
There will be a graveside service at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery Tuesday January 2, 2024 at 1:30 PM.
