From the beginning of her life to the very end, Effie Nell was devoted to the United Methodist Church. She was certified by the Methodist Church as a Laboratory teacher, instructing and preparing teachers to teach in their local Sunday Schools.
She was named Church Woman of the Year in 1977 by the San Antonio Express-News; was an active member of Church Women United, P.E.O., and was highly involved in the Southwest Conference of the United Methodist Church (Now Rio Conference). After volunteering at the Wesley Community Center for many years, Effie Nell became the Director of Volunteer Services for 25 years. Aside from her volunteering, she enjoyed sewing, cooking and taking care of her family. Effie Nell was just as devoted to music as to her church; she was her church pianist for many years and volunteered as pianist at Chandler Estates for over 10 years.
Effie Nell was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Leroy, in 2000. She is survived by her daughter, Linell Pipes and husband Ralph; son, Kirk Grimes and wife DiAnn; 6 grandchildren: Tracy Hogue (Devlon), Joshua Pipes (Tracy), Bethany Baumgart (Eric), Jessica Nichols, Gwennan Covington (John), and Larry Grimes; 15 great grandchildren; sister Bobbie Bounds; numerous nieces and nephews, and many, many dear friends.
The family would also like to thank Effie Nell's longtime caregiver, Yolanda Maldonado for her devoted care and to her beloved doctor, Dr. Dina Leos.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Porter Loring Mortuary (downtown location).
