

He was born in Del Rio, TX to Espectación and Guadalupe Barrera. He was a proud son of migrant farm workers. He graduated in 1967 from San Felipe High School. Mr. Barrera graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and was a devout Longhorn fan. He served as a VISTA Volunteer and was a strong advocate of the civil rights movement.
Mr. Barrera was a pioneer in the field of bilingual education and proudly served in that field for over 30 years. He was a lifelong educator, as well as a lifelong learner.
He was a kind and compassionate man with a loving and gentle spirit. His first love was his wife and his family. His charismatic personality attracted numerous friends. His other passion included caring for his many beloved pets.
He touched the lives of many and will always be remembered and loved.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Ana Isabel Barrera; his parents; and his two sisters, Emma B. Cervantes and Elsa Guadalupe Barrera. He is survived by his wife, Mary Barrera, daughter, Andrea Barrera Vazquez and husband Roland of San Marcos, TX; son, Tommy Felton, III and his wife Esmeralda and their daughter, Teresita all of Santa Teresa, NM; daughter, Lisa Felton of San Antonio; brothers, Espectación Barrera, Jr. and wife, Dora of Del Rio, TX, Enrique M. Barrera and wife, Leticia of San Antonio, Elliott Barrera and wife, Esmeralda of Ozona, TX; and Edmundo M. Barrera of Del Rio, TX; sisters-in-law, Diamantina Paolini of Arlington, TX and Hortencia Garcia and husband Roberto of San Antonio; brother-in-law, Nicolás Cantu of Del Rio, TX; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
