Eleanor A. Krupa (Ellie), age 80, passed away on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born March 31, 1937 and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. Ellie received her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Webster College and Master's degree of Religious Studies from The University of the Incarnate Word. Additionally, she received her Teacher of Religion certificate from the Diocese of Galveston-Houston.
Ellie was married for 56 years to Joseph B. Krupa. She and her beloved husband were blessed with eight children and twenty grandchildren. Ellie faithfully shared and supported Joe's vocation as a permanent deacon and together, they taught marriage preparatory classes for engaged couples. Ellie and Joe enjoyed traveling, taking cruises and attending performances at the Majestic Theatre. Ellie was devoted to her family and treasured her church family for the joy they brought to her life. Ellie cherished each child and grandchild as a precious gift from God, holding each new grandchild at every opportunity. Traditions were a cornerstone Ellie established in her family, making every birthday and holiday special celebrations. She was a kind, deeply spiritual woman and natural teacher who lived her faith and nurtured those around her. She welcomed all into her home whether hosting Air Force recruits for Thanksgiving or family and friends for special occasions.
Throughout her life, in addition to being a full time mother, Ellie was employed as a teacher, principal, catechist and consultant. Ellie held various catechetical positions at St. Pius V, St. Frances Cabrini and St. Luke the Evangelist in Houston, Texas, and at St. Brendan's in Ormond Beach, Florida. She served as the Director of Religious Education at St. Mark The Evangelist, St. Anthony of Padua, and St. Helena's in San Antonio, Texas.
Ellie used reflection, symbolism and storytelling to bring her values and faith to life, connecting her to the adults and children she taught for over 46 years. Whether First Communion, Reconciliation, or Confirmation classes, Ellie shared her children and grandchildren's experiences, family dynamics, and rights of passage to convey the richness and depth of living faithfully in Christ.
Ellie was a consultant for both Sadlier and Silver Burdett Publishing Companies speaking at numerous conferences throughout the United States as a keynote speaker. She was a delegation member of the National Catholic Educational Association to Russia and Lithuania for cultural exchange in education and catechesis. She was also recognized as a Catechetical Scholar at Catholic University and Loyola University.
Ellie completed 46 years of faithful service to the church as the Associate Director for the Archdiocesan Catechetical Center in San Antonio. Upon retirement, she received an Apostolic Blessing from The Holy Father John Paul II.
