Elizabeth "Betty" Haskew Cunningham, 75, passed on Saturday, July 2, 2022 in San Antonio, TX. She was born on September 15, 1946 in Vicksburg, Mississippi to Russell and Helen Haskew. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Barbara; and her infant daughter, Erin. She is survived by her brothers, Steve Haskew (Eleanor) and John Haskew (Linda); her sons, Brian Cunningham (Melanie) and Christopher Cunningham (Micky); her three granddaughters, Erin, Jordan, and Sadaira; and two grandsons, Ethan and Dylan.
Betty was a devout Catholic who spent her life serving others. As a Marine Corps spouse of 30 years, she served fellow service members and their families as an Ombudsman. This need to help others carried through as she was later hired as the very first employee of Northwest Vista College and established and led the colleges veterans center. Betty would move mountains in order to assist veterans in meeting their dreams of graduating college. Not only was Betty the first employee, but also the first graduate. Her love to help others carried over to the San Antonio State Supported Living Center, where her sister Barbara lived and Betty served as President of the Parents Association.
Even more than her love to serve others, was her love for her family. She raised two boys and also took over as caregiver to her sister Barbara once her mother passed. Her love for her family really shined through once she became a grandmother. She would pass down baking recipes with her granddaughter Erin by cooking with her in the kitchen. She spent hours on video chats with her other four grandchildren talking about their hopes and dreams and how to accomplish them. She placed her family above everything and continues to help guide them in her passing. When she had free time, she would spend it with her three dear friends Matilde, Deanna, and Bridget. Together they would discuss life, death, and everything in between. They would laugh, cry and throughout everything, were always there for each other for comfort and guidance.
Betty was a humble and generous servant of God and will be missed.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Monday, July 25, 2022, at Porter Loring Mortuary West.
