Elizabeth was born in San Antonio to Iclea and José Llamas on August 6, 1942. She grew up on Hazel Avenue in San Antonio and attended Jefferson High School, where she met her husband of 66 years, Harry Poe, Sr.
She attended the University of Texas at San Antonio while at the same time raising her young children. In 1977, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Education. For three decades, she was a bilingual elementary school teacher in the inner city. Elizabeth taught at Smith Elementary and Wilson Elementary in the San Antonio Independent School District. She was passionate about teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to her many young students.
Outside of work, she loved cooking and baking for her family and friends. She always had a fresh pot of refried beans and tortillas on hand and was ready to make tacos. No one left her house hungry. She enjoyed cooking Mexican dishes, especially tamales during Christmas, carne guisada, and mole. Her cooking will be greatly missed, and her family will treasure her recipes.
During retirement, Elizabeth enjoyed watercolor painting, crafting, traveling, and cruising with her husband Harry. She was also an active volunteer at the local retirement center, the Village at the Incarnate Word, and was well-known within that community.
Elizabeth loved listening to mariachi and ranchera music, which was always playing in her home. Hearing such music never failed to get her on her feet and dance.
She cherished moments with her family, especially during the holidays. She loved hosting large family fiestas with piñatas and a live mariachi band. She always cooked up a storm, making sure everyone was happy and well-fed.
Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the lights of her life, who affectionately called her “Mamo” and “Grandma”. She was incredibly proud of their accomplishments and enthusiastically shared them with others.
Elizabeth is survived by her devoted husband, Harry Poe, Sr., and their children: Vivian Zotz, Harry Poe, Jr., John Poe, and Carol Ohara. She leaves behind seven grandchildren: Kimberly Robinson, Kurt Zotz, Katlyn Zotz, Evan Poe, Lillian Ohara, Erin Poe, and Matthew Ohara. Also, she leaves behind two great-grandchildren: Barrett Robinson and Evangeline Poe.
Elizabeth L. Poe will be remembered for being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Her generosity, kindness, and love will live on in the hearts of everyone she touched.
