Ellen Carter Braun, better known as “Dede”, crossed the rainbow bridge February 2, 2026, leaving a hole in the heart of many. If a person’s wealth is judged by the number of friends, Dede was the richest person in San Antonio.
Dede was a major people and animal advocate, believing in standing up against abuse, the importance of empathy and the impact of fair treatment for all creatures. She was the head of the Board of Directors for SNAP (Spay, Neuter and Wellness Clinic) From 2015-2016. She made such an impact a kennel was named in her honor. When she traveled, she always took cat and dog food for the strays and kept a supply in her car in case of emergencies. Dede was known to “steal” unspayed animals and return them to the owners after the surgery.
Dede graduated from St. Mary’s University with a degree in teaching and master’s in counseling. Many of her “kids” kept in touch over the years. Through her ability to connect with people, the CIA furnished Harlandale High School with used computers.
Judy (sister) and Dede were travelers. Besides Las Vegas, there were cruises, and a number of trips to Europe. Also trips to New Mexico to visit family and enjoy the food (nothing better than New Mexican enchiladas).
So many more stories to tell about Dede. We would love to have her friends join us February 16th, for a celebration of her life. Everyone has to bring a “Dede” Story to Bourbon St. Restaurant, 2815 N. loop 1604, San Antonio, Texas 78232
Mrs. Braun was happily married to Frank Braun for over 20 years. She loved his daughters, Laura and Shelly.
She is survived by her sister, Judith R. Carter, who adored her.
A visitation at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Ave., will be held on February 10, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Best Friends Animal Society or SNAP in her honor.
