In Loving Memory of Elmer Solidum
Elmer Solidum, aged 92, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas. A good-natured and good-humored father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he lived a full life rooted in generosity and optimism.
Born on May 15, 1932, in Watertown (now part of Honolulu), Hawaii, to Narciso Solidum and Sergia Yabo Solidum of the Philippines, Elmer grew up with a strong sense of family, or 'ohana in Hawaiian. From underdog to All-Star Quarterback, he led St. Louis School (Honolulu) to its first-ever undefeated and untied season in 1949-50. Winning the State Championship became a lifelong source of pride for him and his classmates.
Elmer served 20 years in the U.S. Army, after first being drafted in 1953 at the height of the Korean War, eventually training as a radio communicator. He went on to serve in 1st Special Forces (Japan), 5th Special Forces (Vietnam) and 8th Special Forces (Panama and South America). He returned home carrying medals, scars and stories -- each a testament to human perseverance. The courage and camaraderie of this period remained with him for the rest of his life.
A devout Catholic, Elmer lived with an abiding belief in humility and selflessness, and exemplified hope and gratitude. He lived with pono (integrity) in mind and aloha (love and kindness) in his heart.
Elmer is preceded in death by his parents, brothers James (Jimmy), Florentino (Dudong), Salvador (Sonny) and sister Georgia DeRego.
He is survived by his children: Roxanne and Elmer Jr. from his first marriage to Rebecca Repoyo, and Roma, Elisa, Louis, Yasuko and Kawika from his second marriage to Rosario Morado Solidum; sister Evelyn Au; 23 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. They will forever cherish his love, love of others and love of music.
