Elsa was born to Oscar and Alicia Moran in San Antonio, Texas on August 15, 1954. She was raised on the Westside of San Antonio in the Brady Gardens neighborhood. She attended Sarah King Elementary and Immaculate Concepcion Catholic Middle School. Upon completion of middle school, she went on to Sidney Lanier High School and graduated in 1972. At Lanier, the mighty "Vok", joined the Lanier Drill Team. This is the activity that took up most of her time at Lanier. She loved the parades and the performing. She started her college years at San Antonio College and then transferred to the University of Texas in Austin to complete her education. At UT, she became very active in the Chicano movement and issues of social justice. Elsa met Daniel in 1979 and he chased her until she let him catch her. They were married in July 24, 1982 and just celebrated their 34th anniversary. Their family was completed with Danny and Monica, their children.
She worked with seniors and the disabled, as well as, troubled teens being rehabilitated in a halfway home. She then worked in the LULAC National Office and later in the legal field from where she retired as a Legal Assistant.
Elsa was a true servant leader, led by the example of her parents. She was taught it was always best to give of your time and talents and boy did she give. Volunteering was a way of life. She became a member of LULAC in 1984 and annually worked the credentials at the LULAC National Conventions for many years. She also became President of her local LULAC council. During this council leadership, she created an annual Easter basket give away and Easter Egg Hunt for children on the Westside. The events were held at the Guadalupe Plaza. She coordinated all aspects of the events including logistics and fundraising. The events brought joy to so many children for many years. She was also instrumental in the organization of the annual Diez y Seis parade, which still proceeds on Guadalupe Street today. Her council was named District Council of the Year under her leadership and she was most recently inducted into the LULAC National Women's Hall of Fame.
Elsa was not only a servant leader in her community. Her ideas of self-sacrifice and thoughtfulness carried themselves into her personal life. This is evidenced by the lifelong relationships she has built and nurtured throughout her life. She was always generous and caring to all her family and friends and never made a decision without being mindful about how it would affect others. Elsa's passing leaves us all with a great void in our hearts that will never be filled.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Fernando L. Moran; and her father, Oscar M. Moran. She is survived by her husband, Daniel Valverde; mother, Alicia Moran; children, Monica and Daniel Valverde; grandchildren, Oscar, Alyssa, and Zoe Zapata; siblings, Oscar Moran (Margaret) Yolanda Gutierrez, Elizabeth Degen (Edward), and Yvette Moran (Emilio); numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, Godchildren, sisters and brothers-in-law.
The family will receive friends Sunday, October 2nd for a Memorial Rosary at 6pm at Porter Loring Mortuary on McCullough Ave. A mass will be held on Monday, October 3rd at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1321 El Paso Street, San Antonio.
