Emmett Grady Hendrix, Jr. entered eternal rest on January 28, 2011 at the age of 89. Grady was born in San Antonio, TX on December 13, 1921 and was a lifelong resident of San Antonio. He was preceded by his parents, Emmett Sr. and Mary, his brother George and his son Stephen Anthony. His family moved from Hammond Ave to W. Summit in the 1930's where he attended Jefferson High School, graduating in 1939. He then attended Texas A&M University, as a member of the corp of cadets, where he obtained his degree in 1943. He immediately entered the US Army and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. after completing OCS. After completing flight school he was assigned to the 142nd Field Artillery Group, VII Corps. He crossed the English Channel on D+5 in his Piper Cub and spotted for Corp Artillery during the entire European Campaign. He was awarded the Air Medal with four clusters for his combat service. After the war he was released from active service but remained in the reserves for the next ten years. His career during this time involved a series of endeavors which ultimately led to him going into business with his father. That business evolved into the Alemite Company of San Antonio, subsequently the EG Hendrix Company, which he operated locally for over thirty years. He was a long time member of Oak Hills Country Club, Northwood Presbyterian Church, the Kiwanis Club, the Aggie Club and numerous others. He retained a life-long interest in aviation, operating his own aircraft well into his 60's. Easterwood Field in College Station for Aggie football was one of his favorite destinations. He was an avid golfer, animal lover and outdoorsman. He owned various properties where he enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and family. During his retirement he split his time between San Antonio and the family home in Key Allegro. Fishing, spending time with his children and relaxing after a long and successful business career made his golden years some of his most enjoyable.
Grady is survived by his sons Emmett Grady Hendrix III and Nicholas James Hendrix, both of San Antonio, his daughter Elizabeth Ann Bush of Pebble Beach, CA, his granddaughter Alicia Marie Bush, his grandson Karsen Hendrix and many dear friends. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be sent to The Children's Shelter of San Antonio.
