He was born in San Antonio, TX on September 26, 1922 and raised in Crystal City, TX. He was proud to be a fifth generation Texan whose great-great grandfather came to Texas in 1838. He married Marjorie Post Morrow on June 12, 1946 and enjoyed raising four children.
He was preceded in death by his parents Captain Emory Jones, Sr. and Margaret Elizabeth Logue, and his sister Margaret Hopmann. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; daughter Marjorie and husband Bill Perlmutter of Houston, TX; son Captain Emory Jones III and wife Robin; daughter Molly Jones; son Marshall Scott Jones and wife Connie, all of San Antonio, TX; and brother Landon Jones. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Captain Emory Jones IV, Margaret Elizabeth Jones, Caetyn Jones, Walker Jones, all of San Antonio, TX, and Maggie Perlmutter and Celeste Perlmutter of Houston, TX.
He was a veteran of the Army Air Corp serving from 1942 to 1946. He mesmerized his children and grandchildren with stories of his World War II experiences. He was taught to fly in a bi-plane by a 1930's barnstorming stunt pilot. He was co-pilot of a B-25 with the 15th Air Force, 451st and 461st bomber groups. In July 1944 he was shot down over Linz, Austria and spent ten months in Stalag Luft 1. He escaped prison camp in April 1945. He was overtaken by Russian soldiers on his way to Allied lines and traveled with them until being repatriated to the British a month later. He was forever grateful for the kindness of German civilians who fed him soon after his escape. After being repatriated to American lines, while waiting for a troopship home, he took a self-directed, yet well deserved AWOL for a week in Paris where he and his fellow POW escapee were "treated like kings". He never regretted it.
When asked why he escaped from prison camp when the war was almost over, his response has always been that he wanted to be in control of his own life and live or die on his own terms, rather than those of his captors. He lived that way for the rest of his life. In 1960, he began a real estate career that lasted 35 years. He was an avid hunter. He was a gentle person and an animal lover. He loved his family and they will all miss him.
