

Eric Michael Kaalund, age 62, passed away December 22, 2020, in San Antonio Texas. Son of the late Manuel Kaalund and late Mildred Kaalund. After graduating from Dillard University, Eric moved to Dallas, Texas for employment. Eric began his City of Dallas career on July 29, 1982, as an Accountant.
He rose through the organization, becoming the Real Estate Manager in 1984, and ultimately joining the executive ranks in October 1994, when he was appointed to be the City Controller. With his appointment, Eric became the first African American to be named to that position.
Through his leadership, the City of Dallas earned the reputation as one of the best financially managed cities in the country.
Eric left the City in September 2000, to become the Regional Vice President – General Manager of Western Integrated Networks, a cable television provider.
In 2002, he worked as the Assistant Aviation Director of Business and Finance, with the City of Atlanta Aviation Department (Atlanta Hartsfield - Jackson Airport).
Eric joined the Aviation Department of San Antonio in 2006, serving in several capacities over his 14-year tenure, including Assistant Aviation Director.
To his colleagues, Eric was a hardworking, caring, smart, detailed professional who always had a friendly hello to everyone he met.
Eric was a member of the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (CPA) and a Certified Member with The American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE).
Eric is survived by his son, Garrett Kaalund; former spouse Anne Kaalund; siblings: Bruce (Erria) and Leslie.
A Celebration of his life will take place at Porter Loring North Chapel on Sunday, January 17, 2012 at 3:00 pm.
