

Ernest Reed Freeman was called home to glory on Monday, May 4, 2020. He was born in Houston, Texas in 1938 to Cathern Pearl Reed Freeman and Ernest Freeman and became the oldest son and second oldest of twelve children. He graduated from Flour Bluff High School and attended Del Mar College in Corpus Christi before joining the Department of Public Safety as a Communications Specialist. Throughout his many years of dedicated service he received commendations for heroic performance and was known and respected by patrolmen throughout the state. He also served with the Universal City Police Department and later was a purchasing agent with Southern Steel Corporation and then an outside sales representative with Sunbelt Mill Supply. He resided with his wife of 49 years in San Antonio, Canyon Lake, Pagosa Springs, Colorado, Converse and later Waelder, Texas before returning back to San Antonio.
Ernie, also known as Buddy, is preceeded in death by his wife Lanita Freeman, infant son Ernest R. Freeman II, mother Cathern Freeman, father Ernest Freeman, sister Billie Lee Deutsch, brother William Miles Freeman, sister Lois Welch and brother-n-law Marvin Deutsch.
He is survived by daughter Cynthia Nedell, daughter Cheri Willard and husband Neal, son Robert Freeman and wife Barbara, grandson Jason Kaples and wife Jaime; granddaughters Joy and Jena Willard and grandsons Jonathan Willard, Mason and Zachary Freeman; great granddaughters Drew and Layne Kaples, and Liliana Willard Tolliver; brother Frank Freeman, sisters Sue Chiado, Era McMillan and husband Dennis, Marie Valentine and husband Jimmy, Judy Weiss and husband Gary, Sharon Wolfshawl, Cynthia Clopton, Lynn Brown and husband Tim; and many nieces and nephews.
Ernie was a loyal Dallas Cowboys fan, enjoyed fishing and camping in the great outdoors, playing sports and games, spending time with his family, and good old classic country music. He enjoyed cooking and spent most weekends close to the grill. He loved telling stories, especially of his D.P.S. days, and could always draw a laugh with his wonderful sense of humor. Ernest exemplified courtesy, integrity, good will and gratitude to everyone who crossed his path. He was very giving of his time and was generous to his family. Ernie was cherished and loved by all who knew him and will be deeply missed.
An intimate graveside service will be held at 11:30 am, Monday, May 11, 2020 at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio with a Life Celebration Memorial to be held Saturday, June 13, 2020 at the Peace of Texas Ranch in Waelder, Texas.
