

Ernest Joe Harber passed away on April 24, 2025 and went to be with our Heavenly Father. He was born on June 25, 1932, to William Edgar and Frieda Voigt Harber on his Grandfather Harber’s farm at Creedmoor, Travis County, Texas. He is survived by: Two daughters, Cindy Harber Neagle and husband Bill, Kernersville, North Carolina, Suzanne Harber Suk and husband John, San Antonio, Texas, five grandchildren, Alice Marie Guerra Stickman and husband Matt, Giddings, Texas, Daniel Alexander Guerra and wife, Marina, Samuel Benjamin Guerra of San Antonio, Texas, and Rachel Colleen Neagle and Jeremy Wyatt Neagle of Kernersville, North Carolina, numerous nieces and nephews, and friends and a host of close church friends. He is also survived by his extended family, former daughter in law, Paula Lios and her family of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife and best friend, Jo Ann Harber on May 30, 2018, and son, Paul Alan Harber, parents William Edgar and Frieda Voigt Harber, brothers, Milton Harber and William Harber and sisters Viola Boyd, Lucille Dyer, Anita Haecker, Otine Schaefer, Mary Jane Harber (infant) and brother-in-law Gilbert Dub Parks and his wife Gloria Parks.
He became a Christian as a teenager at the South San Antonio Church of Christ and was an active member of The Sunset Ridge Church of Christ, San Antonio, Texas for over 30 years. He was a graduate of South San Antonio High School, 1949, San Antonio College, 1951 and Texas State University (Southwest Texas State Teachers College) 1953 and 1957. He served in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Hood and Surgical Research Institute, the Burn Center, Brook Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas from 1953 to 1956.
He taught at San Antonio College, Departments of Chemistry and Biological Sciences for 36 years. During that time, he was the Chairman of the Biology Department for over 17 years. He helped establish and was the Faculty Sponsor of the Church of Christ Bible Chair and Student Center. He attained the rank of Professor and retired as Professor Emeritus and Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Biological Sciences. After retirement, He enjoyed being a member of the North San Antonio Retired Teachers Association. Joe taught Bible classes at several churches and, along with Jo Ann, planned luncheons for the Sunset Ridge Sunsetters Senior Group for many years.
