He retired as a LTC. From his military life he continued his work with the Texas Employment Commission and retired from there after 11 years.
E.T. loved to tell stories about his life. To him reflecting on his life and his family never got old. He filled his retired years with reading, visiting friends/family (bearing cookies or some sort of treat), going to Thousand Oaks Restaurant for tacos/and to “open up” and meeting Kathy & Johnny for Sunday Mass and a dinner or lunch during the week.
His greatest love? His family. There’s not a soul that Ernie met that didn’t soon find out about his family. He was so very proud of his children, grand children and great grand children. He lived for family get togethers where he could see everyone and hold the grandbabies!!!!
Looking back I remember my Dad always being there. I remember field trips as a child, athletics and such with him rooting me on. He was at our kids games yelling and cheering on the sidelines. Never did I ask him to come to something that I can remember him saying no. He loved family and cherished the time he had to spend with them.
In his last days I remember our talks. He was at my home on hospice. He “didn’t want to leave his family.” We talked about the love of the Lord and that through faith this wasn’t good bye as we would all be together again in time. That though his family here would miss him, he had family in heaven that would welcome him and he would feel so loved and cherished. I watched my father’s faith grow and strengthen in his final days and as his time on earth shortened we watched as he talked to the Angels and I fully believe the Lord himself as he silently made the sign of the cross and folded his hands in total peace. I know my father is now in Heaven in our Father’s loving care. I will forever cherish his memory and his total devotion to his family.
