Estanislada Ponce Longoria was born on May 7, 1921, in Monterrey, Mexico to Lorenzo Ponce and Maria del Refugio Lopez. She was the youngest of two children. Her older sister was, Maria Baldomera Ponce Lopez who passed away in 2006. Her and her sister were orphans when her mother passed away when she was ten years old. Her father had passed away when she was two years old. They were received into different families initially until they were received together into the Rodriguez family who were close family friends and from the same street they grew up on. The Rodriguez family never had children of their own, but she was accepted and raised as their own daughter. She attended catholic school until the 3rd grade, and then worked most of her young life. At sixteen years old, she began a nurse apprenticeship at the University Hospital in Monterrey, Mexico. She also apprenticed for three other doctors in their private practices. She lived with the Rodriguez family until she married a tailor at the age of twenty-three. She married Roberto Garza Longoria on August 16, 1944. She began helping her husband by working as a seamstress in his tailor shop.
In August of 1955, she, her husband, and three young children migrated to the United States after selling their home and tailor shop. They passed through Laredo, TX and settled in San Antonio, TX. They moved into a single-family home in what is now the Inner West Side of town on W Salinas Street. She had four more children and raised a family of seven children in that neighborhood. She worked as a seamstress after migrating to the U.S. and eventually retired from Lasso Western Wear. She then began working at the University Hospital taking care of newborns for several years and volunteered as a Foster Grandparent. She dedicated herself to her family and to serving and helping others throughout her life. She cared for her elderly neighbors and provided warm meals to them while also assisting with their daily home duties, which included but was not limited to regularly changing and washing their bed dressings. She provided an exemplary example of servitude to her children who also assisted in the care of their neighbors as needed. She lived through and saw most of the 20th century which included many monumental highs and lows and everything in between from the effects of the Spanish Influenza to the Great Depression to World War II to the Civil Rights movement to the Space Race and the creation of the digital age and well into the first quarter of the 21st century and social media and enjoying the experience of an online video chat with her great grandchildren. She and her husband, Roberto Garza Longoria, blessed many people and always loved unconditionally and lived their lives to the fullest. She was a prayer warrior, and prayed for her family, relatives, and others everyday. Her blessings and prayers will live on forever through her ever-growing family who will honor and love her throughout the generations to come. She was an unbelievably strong woman who left an indelible mark on us all.
Amen”– Estanislada Ponce Longoria
