Ethel Newton Affleck was born March 16, 1947 to Ethel Newton and Harry Sinclair Affleck. She attended St Mary's Hall from kindergarten through high school where her middle name resulted in great nicknames such as Newt or Fig Newton. She then attended Pine Manor College, where she met her life-long friend, Patty Slick Beem. She went on to graduate from SMU. After college, Ethel participated in Fiesta as Queen of the Order of the Alamo Court of Mystical Gardens in 1970. She had great times traveling with Patty and many other friends in the years after college.
She married Johnny Clay Johnson in May 1986. They were fortunate to have a son, Henry Clay Johnson who married his love, Caroline Vaughn in August 2015. This was three months after Ethel's cancer diagnosis and was a tremendous joy for her and the whole family. Ethel died on May 3, 2016. She was surrounded by loving friends and family.
Ethel had tremendous wit and loved to laugh but on her terms. She was at the same time a very private person who was content to be at home sending funny emails across the country. Her favorite expressions were "bite me" and "don't touch me" ---both could be used in a multitude of ways. She is now saying "bite me, cancer and don't touch me (anymore)."
She is survived by her husband, Johnny Clay Johnson, her son and daughter-in-law, Clay and Caroline Johnson, her brother and sister-in –law Harry and Linda Affleck, her niece Linda Affleck Stewart and husband Drew, nephew, Harry Affleck and wife, Heather and many close friends.
She is grateful for the wonderful and gentle care of Martha Granado, who has helped not only Ethel but the entire family through this difficult time.
Memorial service is at 11:00 AM Thursday, May 5th at Christ Episcopal Church, 510 Belknap Place after a private burial.
