Gene was born on November 25, 1933 in Shiner, Texas to Frank and Louise Bartos. Gene grew up in a pure Czechoslovakian family, not learning to speak English until after the family had moved to San Antonio and enrolled Gene for first grade. He graduated from Central Catholic High School with the honor of being known as an extremely fast quarter back and running back, helping Central Catholic win many games by his fellow classmates at his 50-year reunion.
After high school, Gene was invited to join the Army where he served two terms of duty, attaining the rank of E5 Sargeant as a helicopter crew chief, Korean war Veteran. After an honorable separation from the Army, he worked several years as an aircraft mechanic for Swearingen at Slick Airways. He rode his motorcycle to work for the night shift.
Gene spent the majority of his life in sales working for various steel and lumber companies in the construction industry. In 1991, he went into business for himself, opening G & L Construction Co. For the next twenty-nine years, he operated a very successful home remodeling business, to include several new home constructions. During that career, he made many friends that became life-long friends.
Gene was a Christian, God-fearing man. He was an amazing and engaging storyteller, capturing the complete attention of all that were around him for hours. He had his own unique brand of “Geneisms” that will live on in the hearts and minds of his family, to be repeated from time to time with a tear or a laugh forever. He had a heart of pure gold, a beautiful smile and loved his family and friends with all his being. He never missed an opportunity to play a set or two of dominoes or forty-two. He loved the outdoors which included many adventures with his sons, grandsons, son-in-law, stepson and good friends. Gene loved to fish at the coast and hunt everything from deer, squirrels, dove and pheasants. He was considered an extremely good shot with fellow hunters offering to make a friendly wager as to who was the best shot, only to result in never asking him to bet again.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Louise Bartos; brother-in-law, Howard Schramm and nephew, Bart Schramm. He is survived by his loving wife, Laura Bartos; son, Dennis Bartos (Diana); granddaughter, Lyndi Stone (Tim); grandson, Jay Bartos; son, Dale Bartos (Tracy), granddaughter, Kristin Grothues (John), grandson, Clayton Bartos; great-grandchildren, Paige and Ryan Grothues; daughter, Carla Shuffield (Jack); grandsons, Zachary Shuffield and Dalton Shuffield; sister, Carolyn Schramm; step-son, Paul Watson (Cheryl); grandsons, Brennan Watson, PJ Watson and granddaughter Haley Fechner (Josh); step-daughter, Tara Welkey (Chris), grandson Jake Welkey.
