

Eugene (“Gene”) W. Ivey passed away on October 31, 2015 at the age of 89. He was born in Chattanooga, TN to John Murray and Maudell Ivey. At the age of 5 his family moved to Pittsburg, TN where he lived & graduated from South Pittsburg High School. After High School he joined the US Army serving as a member of Company F 33rd Calvary in WWI stationed in Germany. After his service he went to the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga, & was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, graduating in 1951. He married Ernestine “Brownie” Henningsen in 1951 in Columbia SC, & went to work for W.T. Grant Co. where he retired after 27 years. He and his wife bought a Ben Franklin Variety Store in Laurens, South Carolina and sold it after 10 yrs. Gene was an active member of the Greenville SC Lions Club where he served as Chairperson for Sight Conservation and received the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellows Award.
Gene was an active member of the Northside United Methodist Church and after moving to San Antonio joined Coker United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Ernestine “Brownie” Ivey, son, Cal Ivey & his wife, Chris; grandchildren, Lynse Salas & husband, Oscar, Kristin Morrison, & Nick Morrison, and several nieces & nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, John Murray, mother, Maudell Ivey, sister, Peg Terhune, & brother, Harold Ivey.
Services will be held Monday, November 9th at Sunset Funeral Chapel at 3:00 pm. Rev. Bill Simons will conduct services.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the American Cancer Society
