Eva Margaret Keller Childers, 88, died peacefully on February 5, 2008, surrounded in love by her children and grandchildren. She had suffered for several years with Alzheimer's disease. Eva is fondly remembered for her loving smile, quick wit and nurturing ways.
Eva was born in Laredo, Texas, on March 1, 1919, to Alice Denike Keller and Harold William Keller. She was preceded in death by her loving first husband Lobit Revard who died young due to tuberculosis, and then by her beloved Herschel Nolan Childers, M.D., to whom she was married for 47 wonderful years. A son, Joseph Lobit Revard and her sisters, Alice Keller Craven and Fern Keller Saunders also preceded her in death.
Eva is survived by her children, Melissa Childers-White and Barry Nolan Childers and his wife Heather Fitch Childers. Eva is also survived by her grandchildren, Lance White, Jared White, Blake Smith, Austin Childers, Lauren Childers and Megan Childers. Eva was a direct descendant of George Clymer of Pennsylvania, who signed both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.
Eva graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio, Texas, and attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. She worked as a kindergarten teacher both in San Antonio and in Washington, DC. Eva lived in Washington, DC with her parents and her young child, Joseph, after Mr. Revard passed away. She also worked as a reporter for the San Antonio Express-News. Eva was very active in many social and charity organizations in San Antonio, including the San Antonio Garden Club, the YWCA, and the Southwest Craft Center and School.
While Herschel was a physician in the U.S. Army Medical Corp, he and Eva lived with their family in Lawton, Oklahoma, and later in Frankfurt, Germany, where he served as flight surgeon. It was during this time that they both fell in love with traveling and eventually traveled all over Europe. Eva and Herschel traveled frequently and joyously throughout the world together. This was one of Eva's greatest pleasures in life.
Eva also enjoyed dancing and was a member of the San Antonio German Club. She was an artist in the truest sense of the word she was creative in her own watercolor work, and she was ever a student of art history. In addition, Eva always had a beautiful garden, which she planted and nurtured herself. She was an excellent cook and volunteered as a homeroom mother, while her children were in school.
Eva was an active, long-time member of Alamo Heights Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher and where she participated in many Bible study groups.
Our world was graced by the elegance and love of Eva Childers.
Those who desire may send contributions in her memory to a charity of their choice.
