

Evelyn Ruth Bridger went to be with her Lord and Savior on Feb. 4, 2024 at the age of 91. She was the 5th of 6 children born to Robert Lee and Willie H. Russell. She was born in Oak Creek Canyon near Sedona Arizona on June 25, 1932. Her family relocated to Texas when she was still an infant. They eventually settled in San Antonio.
Ruth graduated from South San Antonio High School at the age of 16 in 1949.
Ruth met her husband Bob at a local skating rink where he worked. She said he was smitten at first sight. They wed on April 21, 1951 and were married for 68 wonderful years. They had 4 children together. She now has 11 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren that affectionately called her Nana.
Ruth worked as a bookkeeper and bank teller at Kelly Field Nat’l bank retiring in 1983.
Ruth was a proud member of the San Antonio Lioness club for many years. She also served as a den mother for her son’s scout troop 346.
Ruth enjoyed spending time with her family. She especially loved to cook for them. Many Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter dinners were prepared by her as family and friends gathered around. She also loved to sew; making clothes, curtains, quilts and other gifts for her family. She loved putting puzzles together and playing games with friends and family.
Ruth dearly loved her Lord and Savior faithfully serving Him from a young age. She was a member of Churchill Baptist Church where she worked in the library for many years with her dear friend Janie Hill.
She is preceded in death by her parents: Robert Lee Russell and Willie Harris Russell, her brother W. L. (Dub) Russell, her sisters: Elsie Marie Smith, Mary Francis Coats Berry, Betty Lou Mashburn Rasberry, and her Husband: Robert Lamar Bridger.
She is survived by her sister: Pat Balmos, her children: Marjorie Schmidt (David Gary), Diana Gilbert (Morris), John Bridger (Maggie), Jacquelyn Robertson (Tim), 11 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 2 great, great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to The Dick Senter Ministries or to St Jude in her honor.
A visitation for Evelyn will be held Thursday, February 15, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, TX 78232. A funeral service will be held Friday, February 16, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Churchill Baptist Church, 12400 Vista View St, San Antonio, TX 78231, followed by the committal service at San Fernando Cemetery III, 1735 Cupples Rd, San Antonio, TX 78226.
