Evelyn Mildred Mayer Luckemeyer went to be with her Lord on May 11, 2021 at the age of 92. She was born in Fredericksburg, Texas to Herbert and Anna Mayer in 1929. She graduated from Holland High School at the age of 16 and then went on to Texas Lutheran College because she could not get into nursing school until she turned 18. She then went to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin for training to become a registered nurse. Polio was a new virus while she was a student nurse and as a student she was not allowed to go to the “upper floors” where the polio patients were located. One of her jobs as a student was to sharpen and sterilize needles for giving shots. Her first nursing job was at Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital in Kerrville, Texas, where she met Donald Luckemeyer. She married Donald on December 18, 1951 in Kerrville, Texas. She moved with her husband, first to Columbus, Ohio where she worked while Donald went to seminary. After that, they moved outside of New Orleans for Don’s first job. The next moves were to several places in Texas (Littlefield, Mission Valley, Pflugerville, and Karnes City) where Don served as a pastor. In Texas, Evelyn worked at Brackenridge and St. David’s Hospitals in Austin, and at Karnes City Hospital where she supervised all nursing staff and assisted with Wednesday morning surgeries. They moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1985, where she worked at a Surgical Center when the Medical Center was just getting started. She spent much of her life as a very loving and caring stay-at- home mom, cooking and sewing for 6 kids.
She is survived by six children, Ruth (Mario) Seminara, Becky (Kirk) Richard, Paul (Sheri) Luckemeyer, James (Karen) Luckemeyer, Rachel (Mark) Jackson, and Deborah (Todd) Batten; twelve grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
