He attended Brackenridge High School in Texas and served in the United States Army for 6 years as a radio teletype expert. He continued his education at St. Phillips College in San Antonio, Texas, graduating in 1972 with an Associate in Business Management. After retiring from San Antonio Water Systems, he continued to work and was dedicated to getting medications delivered to nursing homes.
Federico enjoyed reading his newspaper at breakfast, especially on Sundays. He had a kind heart with old-fashioned morals that made him critical of people who were selfish and had no dignity or self-respect. He once picked up a hitchhiker and bought him breakfast because the stranger reminded him of his own father. He also took pride in making others laugh with his Dad jokes.
He had a soft and caring heart for animals and a special fondness for all his family pets. During his years as a meter-reader, he would frequently bring home rabbits and turtles. He once took a mouse to the park to be released from a trap but not without leaving a few carrots to hold the creature over. Raising his kids, he would order them to let their pet hamster run around the house freely because pets “should not” be caged.
His hobbies included working on family cars using his self-taught expertise, reading horror books, and watching thrillers on television. He could be creative with car tools, once having his oldest son use a dirt shovel to leverage a car engine while he screwed the bolts in place. Federico would have his son visit the library and check out scary books to read to share in his interest. He often talked about old horror films but could never remember the titles. The father son talks about horror books went on for years.
Fred is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Aguilar of San Antonio; 5 children and their spouses: Ruben and Michelle Aguilar, Anna-Marie and Gilbert De La Rosa, Michael and Melanie Aguilar, Gabriel and Kasey Aguilar; April Aguilar and 10 grandchildren.
The family suggests donations be made to the San Antonio Humane Society in Fred’s honor.
