

Although knowing that death is inevitable, its impact brings about deep and painful emotions, we all respond differently and independently. However, in the end, it requires continuous prayer, a certain level of self-reflection and soul searching to acquire an acceptable level of tolerance.
Hilario “Eli” Guajardo, beloved and devoted husband, father grandfather, great-grandfather, and faithful servant of our Lord, came to the end of his earthly journey on July 2, 2021. Eli as he was mostly referred to by family and friends, lead a very selfless and fruitful life. He was born January 14, 1930 to Samuel and Petra Cortez Guajardo. He was the second of three children. His parents and two sisters, Mary McIntyre and Beatrice Rodgers preceded him in death, as did his oldest daughter, Elaine Guajardo Kelley; nieces, Phyllis McIntyre, Carolyn Adamson and Magdelina Guajardo; and nephew, Michael Rodgers.
Eli was very goal oriented and had a strong commitment to his family, the military, and his church. He had an outstanding as well as fulfilling military career, serving 30 years in the U.S. Army. During his tenure, he was awarded several medals of commendation which includes Good Conduct Medal, Eighth Award Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Medal, One Oak Leaf Cluster and Meritorious Service Medal. Eli was also recognized for his volunteerism and took a number of the young GIs under his wing. He had a deep feeling of concern and compassion for everyone in need.
Although he was born in Laredo, Texas, the family moved to San Antonio where he acquired his basic education. This included Saint Catherine Catholic School and Grant Elementary, Dumbar Middle School and Phyllis Wheatley High School and later he attended San Antonio Community College and Our Lady of the Lake University. At an early age, he found himself immersed in various sport activities. Although he excelled in softball as a pitcher, a game he loved and played until he was in his middle 80’s, Eli was also skilled in hardball, handball, basketball, football, tennis, soccer and volleyball. He made every attempt to perfect his skills in the different venues and shared those skills with various groups in the community as well as his military colleagues. In addition, he coached and managed teams in the different game categories, i.e., military, CYO, and community youth organizations, A number of those individuals developed their skills to the level of obtaining placement in college athletics and /or becoming coaches themselves. Eli was a member of the IABO, a sport officials association.
