Gibby was a native San Antonian and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1943. While at Jefferson, Gibby met her husband-to-be, Tom J. Perkins. She attended U.T. Austin, graduating in 1947 with a degree in education, and served as president of her sorority, Delta Gamma. When Tom graduated from West Point, he and Gibby married and began their adventurous life in the military. From Japan to Germany, from Alabama to Oklahoma to West Point, Kansas, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, Gibby loved discovering new communities and making new friends. Tom often credited Gibby's grace, charm, and organizational skills as integral to his career success. When Tom was on overseas hardship assignments in Korea and Vietnam, Gibby taught elementary school, with a special focus on reading.
Following Tom's early death in 1973, Gibby returned to San Antonio where she had maintained lifelong friendships. She became an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and began working at Trinity University administering continuing education programs. Later, she entered real estate with the Don Johnson Company and Bishop-Tolbert Realtors. Gibby loved art and was a docent at the McNay Art Museum as well as joining Floribunda Garden Club and the Military-Civilian Club. She was an enthusiastic traveler and made many trips abroad: to England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Russia, and Southeast Asia, as well as closer to home including Mexico, Canada, Hawaii, New Mexico, New England, and many of the national parks.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Brig. Gen. Tom J. Perkins.
Gibby is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Perkins; son, Scott Perkins and wife, Chris; daughter, Amanda Perkins; son, Doug Perkins; grandchildren, Christopher Perkins and Taylor Perkins.
