July 25, 1937 – February 1, 2018
Florence Loretta Winkler was called home to her Lord & Savior Jesus Christ on February 1, 2018.
Florence was born on July 25, 1937 to Leo Francis Renaud and Marie Evangeline Gauchey Renaud in Detroit, Michigan. Florence married Rudolph Richard Winkler on February 5, 1955 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Detroit, Michigan. Although Florence was raised in the Catholic Church, she was confirmed into the Lutheran Church on June 23, 1955 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Detroit.
Florence and Rudy left Michigan and started a life together in Texas. After a few years of moving to several cities in Texas and having 3 young children in tow, they finally settled on San Antonio to live and raise their family. There Florence and Rudy had 2 more children, 5 in total. A few years after moving to San Antonio they started a construction company headquartered out of an office which was built in their own garage. Florence was the office manager/secretary for the startup company all while raising their 5 children. As the company flourished she left the corporate world and concentrated on raising her family.
Florence and Rudy lived and raised their family on the world famous “Cicero Street” where not only was she mom to her own kids but also mom to more than 15 kids that lived on the street. She enjoyed being around all her friends that lived on Cicero and even started a Bunco league that originated with these friends. During the summer you could find her out by the pool reading a book while she watched all the kids from the neighborhood swimming for hours. She enjoyed bowling and bowled in a league for several years. She would volunteer to be the secretary for the bowling leagues and you could find her late at night crunching numbers and recording stats. Although when it was time for “Mom Time” she would persuade Rudy to pack up the Winnebago and kids and set out on a road trip and she would stay at home so she could do whatever she chose and recharge her battery.
Christmas was her favorite time of the year, she would start before Thanksgiving decorating her house and wanted everyone over to enjoy it with her. Christmas morning started with her famous “snowflake cookies” she baked and soon after was total chaos with all the kids, grandkids and great grandkids sitting on the floor in front of her ripping through their gifts and she would sit back and take it all in with this great big smile on her face. She will always be remembered as “Mom or Grandma” to all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Florence was loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents, 8 brothers and sisters, husband Rudolph Winkler, daughters Debra Marie Lugar and Sharon Rose Shasteen. Florence is survived by her sister Rosemary Renaud Arden, her children Susan Braden (Jerry), Richard Winkler (Lisa), Burt Winkler (Janet), grandkids Melissa Lugar, Kristen McKanna, Michelle Ritzen, Matthew Braden, Megan Pape, Cecil Sorsby, Misty Hester, Christopher Shasteen, Brandon Shasteen, Cody Winkler, great grandkids Tanner Hester, Kierstyn Hester, Cori Sorsby, Ashlin Sorsby, Caleb Sorsby, Carter McKanna, Hadley Mckanna.
A memorial Service will be held on Wednesday February 7, 2018 at 10 am at Sunset Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Florence’s name to the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church Building Fund.
